I haven't done a WIP thread in a while but I am really excited about this K3GR1 so wanted to go ahead and share what I have done so far.
I decided to keep it simple and just polish the hilt and powder flat black (texture...my favorite powder) pieces here and there to break it up.
I forgot to powder coat the thumb screw but I will need to redo the neck ring anyway (got trash in it) so will do both at the same time tomorrow.
The switches are 12mm AV switches (blue and red) flush mounted and the recharge port is under them.
It will have a CF6 with CEx
batteries will be 2x18650s
LED will be R/rB/G tri-rebel
I am hopefully going to do the install this weekend...or at least start on it.
Here are the pics of the saber after polish and powder (again I have to redo the neck piece and the thumb screw).

It looks like Brimstone. :D I like the double 12mm AV placement.
Subscribed!

Yeah I looked back at the different K3GRs a little while ago and spotted Brimstone as the closest looking to it (though it wasn't as shiny ;) ).
-
Geez that's purty. I need to get some powder coating equipment. The polish is so flawless too.
I imagine the internals are going to look typically MH fantastic as well.
Very nice!
-
Forgive my ignorance but I have to ask... What Is this particular sabre from? I have seen it done many times.
-
The K3GR1 is based off of the Killer Penny, owned by Corbin (one of the original saber greats). Both are classic and magnificent sabers. Last time I checked, I couldn't find any good pictures of Killer Penny on the forum that were still working, but google searching Killer Penny will get you a picture of a shiny, copper, green bladed saber. K3GR1s were made by Acerocket, we call him Wat Tambor these days.
-
(sorry MH for threadjack)
Ahhh... History! (it was during the very first years of tcss and fx sabers as far as I remember)
Thats the original Killer Penny (from 07').. It has since gone through a rebuild an upgrade, maybe twice?? (and while I just cant actually remember who has her now).. She is still around... Somewhere
Id be certain Jango knows (leave it to the bounty hunters)

About the k3gr... Love love LOV the flush mount switch upgrade... GOTEAM MH!!

looks really cool, MH! the K3GR1 design is just great! can't wait for the install! :)
-
Beautiful contrast between the highly polished and textured black colors. A very elegant looking K3GR1.
-
I have to say MH that your polish and shine is the best I have seen. I think I can see my reflection in your pictures from here. ;D I am going to have to learn how to get that mirror finish. I always seem to get a shine, but not like that.
-
I do remember the killer penny :) well not from when it came out but I have seen it around I just thought Maybe it was a EU characters saber. It is a beautiful saber though Wat always does great work.
-
Man, I've wanted one of these for a long time. If you decide to sell it, let me know!gorgeous work
-
The install is now done. I am just going to post a couple of pics now and add more when I am completely finished later.
I ended up putting the CEx in the neck portion after boring it out a little. This made for a much easier and cleaner install than how I originally had planned on doing it.

This may go up for auction or sale later on I have to decide if I am buying it from the customer or selling it for him.
-
really nicely done mate
-
Great install, MH! I really like those AV switches, and the carbon fiber accents. And of course your mirror polishing is always hands down the best I've seen. With the RGB and CeX this K3GR1 will be a performer inside and out! This makes me wish my old K3GR1 "Advent" so much.

It had an overhaul done on it a while back ;)

More wiring pics...click to enlarge
Here you can see the CEx outside of the hilt wired up. I took a plastic tube (same one used in the OM obi) and cut it to fit the inside of the neck piece to protect the CEx.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmandysbabies.com%2FK3GR1%2FK3GR1-f3.jpg&hash=c9b7be97b43ac5f2a28982f15df9d2fe91d59e1d) (http://mandysbabies.com/K3GR1/K3GR1-f3.jpg)
Then I pulled the Green and Blue (channel 1 and 2 of the CEx) wires up through the heatsink as I pushed the CEx up into the neck and cut and soldered the wires to the LED. I did this to keep the excess wire down.

Here you can see the CEx in the neck area.

Lastly here are all the parts in the forward piece (switches and recharge port). I had trouble with the small gauge wire breaking at the terminal when screwing the switches in so I decided to secure them with hot glue. This is not something I normally have to do but with the tight spaces and the way the switches are I felt this was the best way to make sure the wires stayed secure during the install. It also keeps them insulated (one switch is close to the recharge port...not touching but close enough that the glue is nice to have as an insulator).
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmandysbabies.com%2FK3GR1%2FK3GR1-f6.jpg&hash=6d98db4f6af16debd82996768fcce175399254e7) (http://mandysbabies.com/K3GR1/K3GR1-f6.jpg)
The neck ring and thumbscrew are in the paint stripper. Tomorrow I will re powder them and put the saber together completely and post completed pics and a video.
Also I didn't address the carbon fiber stuff. Basically I didn't like how the heatshrink looked on the batteries under the board so I decided to dress it up with the carbon fiber sticker stuff I had. The batteries still have their individual heat shrink and the PCB also has its own heatshrink to protect it.
-
awesome wiring as usual man!
-
Its pretty much finished now. I just have to make a way for you to pull the speaker out to get to the SD card. Unfortunately because of the lack of room you have to pull the chassis back in order to get to the R.I.C.E. port but its not a big deal. Just undo the 4 locking set screws to pull it back and the port is there.
Here are some pics of the finished saber. As usual click to enlarge.

How well does that sticky backed carbon fiber work on curves? We have a ton of "scrap" at work and I've been meaning to put it on a saber, but was a little worried it might not like staying on a curved surface very long.
-
Update on the saber. It is now finally finished. I had some extremely strong mini magnets that my wife uses to hold pacifiers in the mouth of the baby dolls she makes. These magnets proved strong enough to hold the speaker in yet allow you to pull it out with a pull tab attached so you can get to the SD card. I will do some "tree hitting" (don't trust dueling with the kids because they might hit the shroud extension and bend it) to see if it will hold up to the banging but early tests seem to say it will be fine.

Well the stuff I have is not real CF. Its a sticker for auto trim I believe. It is the most real looking CF sticker material I have ever found though and pulls off the illusion well. Since its basically just a sticker though it does well on the rounded parts (its not very thick or stiff).
-
Very nice!
Most impressed with the neatness of your wiring --- very clean.

these magnets you speak of... where might one find them?

Thanks all my saber internals look like that. I try to keep it as neat on the inside as possible from nice/proper solder joints to planned and properly run wires. I am pretty picky about it lol.

I get them from hobby lobby for her. Man they have gone up though. Below is the link and it shows them at $4.99 for 6 but the package I have (probably 2 years old) says 10 for $2.99.
I assume these are correct since they look the same and its the same part number on my box. The only problem may be if we put the wrong magnets in this box but since they look the same I think its the right ones.

I don't think I've ever seen a 'bad' K3RG1, but this looks exceptionally tidy and pleasing, inside and out. Great job, thanks for sharing!
-
Excellent work as always MH. Now where's that thumbs up icon?

This saber is now proudly displayed at the Smorgis household.
Now has a CFv7 w/ CeX and RBG SMD bargraph mounted on the CF.
K3GR-1 displayed next to my MHSR-1. Just waiting for the big brother Legacy to show up.

Look great sitting there. Yeah I never did update the thread to show I put a CF 7 in it. It was actually the saber I did CF7 beta testing with.

beautiful dude, wow

Cool nice display 8)
