I gave ANH a 7. I thought it was good. But it wasn't my favourite.
-
Gave it a 9 it was the first one it was amazing, would like to see em redo Ben vs Vader tho, and the space battle at the end coulda been a bit more epic, i mean come on is the empire really gonna leave the death star defenseless no capitol ships anywhere i dont thinks so
-
Ya what strikes me is that at the end of ROTS they see the deathstar being built. But they don't get it operational until 20 years later. Then when they build the second one they get it operational before it is built. Anyone else notice that? haha I though ANH lightsaber battle could have been way more intense but their rods kept breaking. haha
-
if you wikipedia the deathstar it says that ( and i believe this is canon) that first death star was delayed for a few years because of something taking place on Kessel and that its becoming operational was delayed,
-
So what it would've taken 18 years instead??? hahahaha I didn't like how there was an imperial senate. I mean if they made ANH now. After ROTS then vader and palpatine would've been ruling and would need no senate.
-
well about half way into the movie they did say that Palpatine dissolved the senate and replaced them all with local governors so they were gone, probly just had to strengthen his empire before he could get rid of the senate entirely, i mean you need some support before you make a rash move like that
-
Ya that is true. Governor Tarkin I think his name was. He like controlled Vader. It was even said in a commentary or something that Vader wasn't top dog that Tarkin was about the same rank as Vader. With Palpatine being highest.
-
ya didnt leia make the remark of tarkin holding vaders leash, oh and question, was that tarkin in the end of ROTS on the bridge with Palpatine and Vader
-
I had to give ANH a 10.
I was four or five when I first saw it circa '77 so for me, and expect many others, the nostalgia factor alone is worth top marks.
I think it deserves high praise in it's own right though. It introduced us all to some iconic characters, who have since become household names, it broke new ground with special fx, and gave us the idea of the 'used galaxy'.
Love it love it love it want the opening crawl carved on my gravestone.
-
ya didnt leia make the remark of tarkin holding vaders leash, oh and question, was that tarkin in the end of ROTS on the bridge with Palpatine and Vader
Yes, that was Tarkin. When I saw ROTS at the theater with my parents my mom asked how they got Peter Cushing in the movie. :D
I voted 9. It's a great movie, but not perfect. The beginning drags on for awhile before something happens, but the story was told so well. The Death Star battle was great, I do hope they work on the Vader/Obi-Wan duel.
-
I say its ahead of TPM but better than AOTC
-
10!
First time that the world was introduced to A Galaxy Far, Far Away....and the weapon of the Jedi!
-
Years ago I would have rated it 10, but nowadays I would give 9. It's a real classic :)
-
It was a great movie but I thought some parts were boring.
-
The only part that I didn't like is the ending. My favourite was the beginning, showing tatooine, showing luke and the droids. It was all were the adventure took place. The deathstar was cool because of the garbage disposal. haha
-
Interesting, Ki-Adi, I've heard a lot of people say that they found the beginning of ANH boring, and that nothing happens until about halfway through.
But I'm with you, man, I love all the Tatooine stuff.
-
I loved the start, it was cool seeing the life of Luke and stuff like that :)
BTW I rated it 10, it was Da' Bomb if you ask me :D
-
Oh gosh, haha, this movie is a straight 10 without question. That's an immediate fact. It doesn't even require mine or anybodys opinion to be a 10 anyway. I mean if you rate this movie anything less than a 10 than you really haven't thought it through. Because this is where it all began. It meaning this site, our FX sabers, the whole Star Wars everything! Where would all that be if this movie wasn't made? This "IS" Star Wars, the upmost original it doesn't get anymore original than this film. So next time you take a look at your FX you gotta remember this movie is to thank because it's the first time we ever even got to see a lightsaber period. These simple facts make this movie uncomparable. But when it comes to a movie quality standpoint it may not be the best...But who cares back then is was the best there was...lol...What this first iconic movie has started makes this movie Supreme above the others nuff said.
-
So what it would've taken 18 years instead??? hahahaha I didn't like how there was an imperial senate. I mean if they made ANH now. After ROTS then vader and palpatine would've been ruling and would need no senate.
Well you have to remember that this was the first time doing this type of project so of course it's going to take some time. But once you learn how to do something one way you start to notice that the second time you can do it more efficiently and alot faster. So by the time the second death star was thought about the empire already had an idea because they had made one before. And they refined the process of making it also so that's why it was made bigger than the first one and why they were able to make it operational so quickly.
-
They wasted all there time in the Death Star, and only about 45 min. do you see them in another place. Maybe 50 min.
-
10 10 10 10 10. As the Professor said, it started everything. This film founded the Star Wars galaxy and idea.
-
i gave ANH an 6 it needs to redone a little ;)
-
I gave ANH a 7. I thought it was good. But it wasn't my favourite.
My thoughts exactly.
-
^I agree.
7, not the best. ESB really improves over it. Still a classic and great movie though.
-
8 It laid the groundwork for the others.ESB improves it a great deal if it was the only SW movie.I would give it a 10
-
You have to give it a 10. C'mon it's Star Wars OT...the best thing ever! We can all have our complaints about boring parts, mismatching scenes, etc...but remember, Lucas HATED ANH when he released it. He nearly died making it, he stressed himself out so much that his blood pressure skyrocketed and he may have even had a small heart attack, I don.t remember at the moment. The only reason ESB and ROTJ can be called "better" is because Lucas promised himself he would not release another movie if it turned out like ANH did. We all love it.
-
All around, it was one of my favorites, but it had it's flaws of course.
I give it an 8/10.
-
~6~
All right. Hate me. But this was a boring movie.
Sure it was the birth of the Star Wars saga. Sure it was a revolution in special effects and movie making.
But it was slow.
C-3PO in the desert, Uncle Owen droid shopping, doddling on the Falcon, sitting around the Death Star (if you want more, I got 'em)
Once Leia was rescued, it started to pick up...started. But it's a difficult watch for me, and I consider myself a diehard fan. :-\
Redeeming points: dialogue, introduction of characters, how even after the PT every scene still has profound meaning, Vader-Kenobi duel, attack on the Death Star.
-
i have to agree that my favorite stuff is the Tatooine part. Is the Threshold of the hero, how can that be boring?. Is where we identify ourselves with Luke having in common our desires for adventure,of greatness,of power... after realizing we are just farmers..in a small corner of the universe.
I gave him a 9, first because ESB is the only 10 that can be, and second, is the fact that i see in ANH a lot of Kurosawa and the Robin Hood adventures ,it has so many influences that i cannot ignore them, even if i try.
Its one of those films where you see a detail or a scene and go "oh i know where they got this from, thats from 2001,or this is taken from Hidden fortress,or from the wild buch or from the Dambustes,or the 633 squadron.
That takes me out of the movie experience a bit because i feel like dejavu and this kind of gives away the plot because you start predicting how everything is going to end up ( one example,in Lord of The rings The fellowship of The Ring, Gandalf being dropped by the balrog to the pit, before he looks at Frodo and speaks "run you fools",Gandalf falls to de void ,giving a "fake impression of his death",Frodo desperate for the loss.Is the same as Obi Wan looking at Luke before Vader strikes him to death,Luke screaming and after he hears ObiĀ“s voice "Run,Luke, run", but since you detected the main influence, now you know Obi-Wan will return, maybe not as matter, but he Will be seen again).
Im not saying ANH its not a work of art.But Instead, ESB is THE INFLUENCE, i dont see any aspect of ESP which is not "original",except Bespin which was first seen in Flash Gordon,But aside of that, Empire is the standard for everything that will be attempted in the future.I dont assume to know anything but to me, ANH was an adventure collage, was the gathering of the collective Unconscious. But Empire Strikes Back IS Star Wars.
-
I rated it a 9..... I thought it was excellent and Industrial Light and Magic's innovations in special effects came about because of ANH.... leaping light years in the special effects industry!!! They had a low budget to work with and overcame many obstacles while working on this.
-
I gave it a 10 because:
1) First installment of the Star Wars Universe, lightsaber, characters, and so forth.
2) Pioneered a lot of special effects. The effects look darn good, even today.
3) First movie future generations need to start watching first!
4) The only Star Wars movie I would ever lower from a 10 would be Episode 1 because of a couple reasons.
-
DarthYoda..... You're right.... all the Star Wars movies really deserve a 10..... I am just too much of a critic and because of a few little inconsistencies that have been noticed, I gave it a 9 instead of a 10..... Compared to most movies I have seen even the great special effects of today, it still does really deserve a 10 tho....considering the advances brought both to the screen and the philosophies shared with the world.
-
All the originals get a 10!
-
Really old, post, but I'll chime in.
For when it was released, I would give it a 10
You have to remember that action movies didn't have a lot of fighting in them back in the 70's, unless you were watching a bruce lee movie, but even now the fighting scenes in bruce lee movies, are outdated with the special effects used today.
Rating the original movie, to current movies would be like racing a car with original parts and engine from the 70's against a 2009 Lamborghini, of course the Lamborghini is going to win, but the original star wars movies were ground breaking achievements back in 1977.
Take the recent movie release of Avatar, twenty years from now the movie will be 'old hat' and the special effects that are endearing it to audiences will not seem so special twenty years from now (unless we enter some type of apocalpyse and take a backwards turn in scientific achievements)
I think that the portions of the first movie, dialogue, character interaction, are exactly what are missing from the new movies. The old movies could use a few things from the new, and the new a few things from the old, and then you would have a '10' for modern times.
If i was just watching the movie for the first time (remember watching it when I was 6 or 7 on vhs - back in 1987) I would probably rate it a 6 because it doesn't seem original, but that would only be because of all the movies that built off the original ideas presented in the film.
-
I gave it a 7 it was great as the first movie but its not my favorite...
-
I gave this a 9.
Ah, how ANH insipired us all. Hey Ki-Adi. I didn't read this whole thread, but Vader was above "everyone", except the Emperor. When Leia made that leash comment it was because (I believe), Vader didn't mind getting his hands dirty compared to the cowardly Moffs. In the novels they don't exactly say it, but it basically came down to what Palpatine wanted. That comment was also to make Vader mad I'm sure as well.
Palpatine's vision was he rules everyone. Vader had to be second, because he was his apprentice and the rule of two. Grand Admirals could not be touched, because they were all genius's. Moff's were governing their own sectors of the galaxy to keep everyone in-line. So in short.....Vader couldn't just kill someone who annoyed him unless it was necessary.
Because of that frustration though, I think that is why Vader took it out in his own Superstar Destroyer, very well named, Executor.
-
Where it all started, what more can i say,my Dad took me to see it in the theater when i was 6 and i've been hooked ever since.i give it a solid 9!
-
Great Movie!!!! Perfect story, great acting!!!!! 10
-
I rated it a 7. It wasnt my favourite but it was still pretty good. Come to think of it, it might have been worthy of an 8.
Of the original trilogy, it was my second favourite behind ROTJ.
-
I give it a 9. Everyone has to remember it was the first installment of the Star Wars main trilogy and therefore, you cant judge it based on the crappy 10 minute lightsaber duel. I dont think Lucas intended lightsabers to be the focal point of the original trilogy but instead was just a sweet add-on perk of being jedi. The main thing was learning the use of the force and being one with it or whatever philosophical wording is used.
However, I think there was great feedback on the awesomeness of a lightsaber after the creation of the orignal trilogy that a new prequel trilogy was made that focused more on lightsaber duels, which is evident in all 3 prequel trilogies: obi-wan/qui-gon v. maul, gladiator ring of jedis v. badiees, yoda v. emperor, anakin v. obi wan, etc etc.
In conclusion, I think that the original trilogy was titled "Star Wars" therefore had more "star wars." and that the prequel would fall much under the title of "Lightsaber Wars." Come to think of it, the only major space war I can remember is from the Phantom Menace. There could have been more in the other TCW and RoTS, but I dont remember them at all- or did not leave as much a significant impact as it did in the original trilogy. The vice versa goes as well. I remember the space fights a lot better than the lightsaber duels in the original trilogy.

I went on about this in another thread. examine the first scene: the rebel ship goes zipping by, and disappears to a speck on the screen; the star destroyer starts as a speck on the screen, and emerges into view until it fills the entire frame. in the first ten seconds we are given the relative size of the rebellion vs the empire. we know who the aggressor is. we know that the rebellion is shrinking, as the empire grows, to dominate everything. :o its visual poetry.
enter:Vader. as a seven year old, in the audience, back in 1977, he scares the living crap out of you. nobody's ever seen a villain like this guy before. he picks up the rebel captain with one hand and breaks his neck.. then demands more victims, 'I want them alive'.
enter:Leia. she's like, 5-foot-nothing. this tiny little petite brunette. she gets right up in Vader's grill and.. tells him off! she's not afraid of anything. as a seven year old, in the audience, back in 1977, you just want to hide behind her skirt and let HER do the talking. you'll follow her ANYWHERE! (you'll buy the doll, you'll kick the ball, you'll sleep on the sheets).
enter: luke. he will be your guide through the galaxy far away. he will ask EVERY stupid question on your behalf. he will rescue the princess FOR YOU. :o
this movie is SOOO well put together, it makes everything else look stoopid.
(( meanwhile, TPM doesn't EVEN have a clear protagonist . *ahem* yeah. "good game, lucasarts"))
-
I whole heartedly agree with you Wedge!
And for the record, the lightsaber duels in the original trilogy trump ALL the duels in the Prequel trilogy because they were a in internalization of the characters personal struggles. They had a necessity to the scripts because they were conflicts of a personal nature. The struggle between master and apprentice and the loss of a friendship. Vader vs. Obi-wan. Then the struggle between father and son. Vader and Luke.
I'd give every single film of the original trilogy a 10. The writing was strong, though not perfect. The characters were clearly defined and their motivations were evident.
That opening shot of ANH just says so much without a single line of dialog! In a few brief seconds we know who is who and how ill equipped and fledgling the Rebel alliance is compared to the Empire.
Who can forget the moment that Obi-wan gives Luke his father's lightsaber? All of us being lightsaber fans, we can all agree that the moment Luke hit that switch, we were hooked. The whole scene is just filled with story telling power! Obi-wan speaks of the Force. We learn about the Jedi and how they were betrayed. Then we get the call to adventure when R2 plays the message from Princess Leia.
There is something to be said for firsts. A New Hope is the benchmark by which all other Star Wars stories are told.
-
10...10...10...When I saw Star Wars, (none of this A New Hope business) I was 4yrs old. My mom said I didn't blink and my jaw was to the floor. I have been hooked ever since. There will never be a film that will beat it.
-
8 for me, a good one but not the best
-
Gave it an 8... Nothing to really complain about, but the budget really does all the talking anyways. Empire just simply outdid this film, and it did everything it could to cram as much good as it could. Without a truly modern update to certain parts of it, it just seems somewhat dated now... its how you say "you can polish a turd, but its still a turd"... But its one killer, end all be all Star Wars turd ;)
-
reading the comments about these films has been fun!
gotta say these days i rate ANH at only a 7 especially since he added all the extra scenes, it didn't need it, the attempt at putting jabba in the film was laughable at best, could of done a whole lot better, SKINNY Jabba lol what the xxx!
just so you know this came out 6 years after i was born, ive seen all the films more than 1000 times each, i did watch them once a week for about 3 years when i was a kid, i was obsessed hahaha and now i fall asleep when i try watching them, the last time was 3 days ago watching ROTJ lol, i know them off by heart, so i guess it just bores me now.
don't get me wrong though, they are still the greatest films of all time in my opinion.
-
Good movie, not the best in the series but was something different at that time. We saw a young Luke and the old Ben(Obi Wan) Kenobi. It was nice to see his story shown in his younger years with the newer movies as well. Definitely liked it but not my favorite overall.
-
ANH is my second favorite movie out of all of them. It's not that I liked anything in particular about it, it's that it wasn't as good as ESB but was better than... well... all the others. I give it an 8.
