We mean in the story line, they had to have a story to go with the saber's changes like Darth Vader lost his saber to Obi Wan so Luke could have it :P

Well, there is none really... there isn't supposed to be any difference so no story was needed.  Just leave it as he was tinkering.  Like the Luke ANH changing to ESB... it's all real-world reasons.

but there's a story, he messed it up trying to upgrade it and had to make another one
EDIT: he messed up a saber he tried to build and upgraded his lightsaber from ANH to ESB.

Where is this story from?  Frankly I don't much stock in them as I KNOW that it was just the prop department trying to make do with what they had.  Even if it's an "official" source it seems silly to try to make a story for it.  Like the Mace EP 1 to EP 2 thing was lame.

well it's not really an official story I just read that he messed a lightsaber up trying to build one and upgraded the ANH to the ESB for no reason.

A tradition of sharing sabers as sort of a bond between masters of equal rank.  Lame...

And like I thought the "story" djforce heard was unofficial.

well there needs to be a story so that there can be an answer to why the lightsabers changed or it wouldn't look right (Anakin ep. 2 to Anakin ep. 3)

There was no need to make up a story there.  It was on screen.  His lightsaber got cut in half! :P

There is no on screen reason for the differences between ones like the Vader ANH to ESB.  Just like the Mace thing, no one but us intense fans would notice things like the grips being placed differently.  To a casual observer it it the same.

When there was major differences there was an explaination.  So like I said the differences are small and an explaination isn't needed (in the OT saber) except to satisfy us nerds. :P

Even saying OT sabers is misleading... there are differences on the Obi-Wan TPM and AOTC.  No one's screaming for an explaination there because it looks virtually the same.  In the dark the ROTJ Vader LOOKS to be the same saber.

My theory for the ROTJ Vader is: After ESB, Vader was thinking about his disappointing reunion with Luke and decided there could only be one solution. To make a saber that would go beyond even his first official sith saber (ROTS Vader) proving just how evil he still was.  To quite simply make the ugliest lightsaber ever conceived.  And he succeeded, beyond anyone's wildest dreams. :D
