Title: About the Petit Crouton....
Post by: QUI-GON JINN on February 25, 2011, 06:48:51 PM
for those that think the Petit Crouton soundboard isn't loud enough,  or plays too many swing sounds when it's sitting still,  or that the ultrasound is louder/better,  watch this:

Good comparisons Master Jinn, this will be a good reference topic!

Thanks for the video Qui-gon,

Out of couriosity, do you have both of your PC sabers set to the same sensitivity?
I noticed the one was a lot more sensitive just sitting there, and was wondering if they have different settings or if the location of the board makes that much of a difference in the end result.

I will have my PC installed into my MHS saber tomorrow when the rest of my parts show up.  Can't wait.

You're right about two things:

1) The only time your saber should just be left humming on the table is if you're making a video(like this one).

2) There's nothing wrong with the PC.

Liked the video, nice to see the difference resonance can make even with some of the best boards. Also, I can see how some wouldn't appreciate the PC going off like that. In the video you said the soundboard was right on top of the battery pack so it could be helped my moving it right? Unless of course the size of the saber doesn't allow such a thing! It would bother me if my saber never had a nice hum I could count on and simply made sounds while sitting still, I think there is a nice balance to be had. From what I've seen before, and just from this video the PC definitely has the capability for that balance and is really an amazing soundboard.

The one that was going nuts with the swings while it was sitting there does that because the soundboard is located on top of the battery pack and also directly in front of the speaker.  The swing sensitivity settings are not the same,  either.  The setting in the config file for CS-35 was 0.67,  and the RLSA saber's is set to the stock 0.55.  The RLSA saber was getting multiple swing effects triggered by the vibrations caused by the speaker being one inch away from the swing sensor on the board.  That's the proof that the board functions best when it's the furthest away from the speaker as you can get it.

So true.
Sabers are cool.  :D

Theres only a few things where one would want a saber humming on it's place; Review/Showing the saber vid or doing an insane super-saber-chorus.

Thanks for the vid! Reminded me of how painful the 2.5 sec. "off-protection" on the US was :D

having read a few posts on sound issues with the new PC-L this is a really usefull vid, .. no sound board is perfect, all of them have pro,s and cons... yep i agree totally with one of your last statements during that vid, most of the fun comes from actually building the lightsaber, just make the best of what you have.

Sigh, I never thought the US was better or louder.  I was just pointing out that I didn't have enough resonance...

Let me put it in black and white. The PC-L is the superior soundcard ti the ultrasound in every way and when resonated correctly, is louder as well

Excellent work Qui-gon.

Thank you for a good comparison.

I was thinking the sensitivity with the swings could be considered a bonus.  Turn the saber on at a party while it's in the stand and you are getting some action just leaving it in the stand, not just the idle hum.

But the fun is when you swing it around.

i got a quick question about the PC manual. On the basic wiring diagram, is the orange line for the ground lead? And the ground lead is ALWAYS negative?

I believe Erv always uses blue as the ground in the diagrams.
Ground is always negative.

Thanks for taking hte time to do this comparo Master JINN.  Everything you say in the vid is true.  For those of you who put your speaker close to the board, you will get swings (a hazard of analog sensors) so just adjust your sensitivity.  Also, occasionally the little ball in the sensor will get "stuck" (happened to me during shipping a couple of times).  It can be "unstuck" by hitting hte saber's blade on something soft a few times (a few solid whacks) and you ought to be good...or send it back in the mail for repair and it will be fixed all by itself  by the time it gets to MH ;)

Just thought I would share a quick video of my PC install progress.
Soundfont is Darkmeat for those who have not heard it.
I am waiting on a few parts but decided to do a dry run.
Sounds nice and loud to me.  Can't wait to finish it.

The PC is the second best soundboard available to the CF! I've spent hours, days, months waiting for this to finally be available for the public only to read some complaints.  How loud do you really want your saber?  It really bothers me to read post on which others try to help others but get ignored.  I'm very happy with the PC and will continue to support those who brought this possible ;) :)
BOOM!!!

I think that applies to all soundboards..............except crystal focus. But then again, I' have never owned one so I dont know its limitation. However, because I have never physically touched one, I shall continue to bow down to its seemingly divine prowess.

Are you talking about posts in general? or are you bothered by the posts in this thread. It may be naivete optimistic nature speaking, but I don't really see complaints and people being ignored. I see people worried about their soundboards that they probably never owned before (because...well...before recently, acquiring a PC was perhaps even more difficult than acquiring a CF, simply because it was not sold in public, unlike the CF where you had a chance with the F5 button) and the board was doing things that they "think" is unnatural(again, I think I have to stress that this is probably their first time holding a holy grail's child, which is still more complex than your everyday FX/Hasbro soundboards).

The setup would be two series pairs in parallel.  Not a great solution for cool colors (green, blue, cyan and white) I'm afraid :(.  Red, amber, yellow, orange and purple work well.  Without getting too technical, it is because  the forward voltage of the blue, green, cyan and white exceeds the 7.4V set up so you will be under powering the LED.  Add that to the fact that the current available from PC  is right at 1.5A (vs. the 2A available on CFV5), which will give you right at the minimum current of 750 ma per die, there is no ability for the current to help compensate for the under powering.  Honestly, for a blue, green, cyan (Lux V only) or white you'd be better off with either a 5W LEDEngin, a Lux V, or a P4.

cheers.. 5 watt it is then
Title: Re: About the Petit Crouton....

Also, keep in mind the 10W is a $30 LED so if you can't maximize it's potential either with multi-die effects or with full power, it may not be worth the added cost.  Of course a Lux V is pricey too, particularly since they are no longer being made :'(.

I have to point out that while those railmaster speakers have more headroom (hence much less distortion) than the regals, they are noticeably lower in volume. The difference is like 3 and 4 on the volume setting of a CF which is quite a big difference.

I promptly went back to those regals. The only time I encountered distortion with regals is when I converted a track with too high of a volume for use with isaber. Never encountered distortion yet with any soundfonts with the exception of Episode II by Novastar. But Novastar already admitted that that font will be problematic with newer CF.

Which Regals are you currently using 1W or 1.5W.
