THE STORY
At last we shall have revenge......of the Sith with the release of the Darth Maul Force FX lightsaber from Master Replicas.
Along with everyone else in the known Star Wars fandom, I was highly anticipating the release of the Darth Maul(DM) Force FX(FFX). I did not jump on the pre-order bandwagon as I decided I should be patient and wait for the right time. Mostly knowing that the first runs of a saber usually aren’t as well done as the later runs. I learned my lesson from that when I preordered the Anakin AOTC saber.* So 2 months after its actual release I went ahead and put my order in for the Full DM FFX(double-bladed), knowing full well I wouldn’t be satisfied having only 1 Battle-Damaged saber to toy around with and also because I wanted the cool looking “double” box.
Only 2 weeks of waiting and my saber arrived to me in its usual brown box, but not so usual size. Thus the review begins...

THE SABER OUT OF THE BOX

Packaged in the usual plastic sleeve and foam protective pieces the saber took some wrangling to get out. It seems to be a very tight fit in the styrofoam.(note: initial review of only half saber)
Once I had it out and in my hand I was very taken with the weight of it. I could indeed feel more of the weight of the blade than of the hilt.

The design of the saber is dead-on to the weapon that we see Darth Maul wield in Episode I. The finish is exquisite. Resembling the finish of the Luke Skywalker ROTJ FFX, but in a more refined prequel style.

The Battery Holder for the DM saber is a NEW generation 3xAAA holder. The use of a new AAA holder makes this saber 5th Generation.*

The Endcap for the saber is in a Battle-Damaged form. The 2006 Lucasfilm and Master Replicas copyright stamping, along with “made in China”The detailing is very close to what was seen on the LE replica while still incorporating sound emitting holes for the sound fx.

Note the detail on the burned wires coming from the assembly. Painted Copper and then the tips brushed with black for that “sliced by a lightsaber” look. The wires are actually part of the plastic “crystal” assembly used as an accent for the endcap. If you were to remove the crystal, which you can by loosening 3 screws, then the wires would come out with it.

The On/Off switch for the DM saber is the Anodized Red Knurled Knob that is near the Emitter. It doesn’t take much movement of the knob to activate only about a 10 degree turn.

The majority of the saber is the exposed milled aluminum that has an elegant luster and a cold touch to it. Also note the faux LED and the hexnut detailing.
There are some sections of the saber that are painted a Bright Silver to accent certain aspects of the design.

The first being the “arrow-feather” section of the saber. These longitudinal angled accents add a bit of flare to the end of the saber near the emitter. Helping to make it look wider than it actually is so the design flows better with the oversized milled rings of the emitter.

The second section being the center or “adaptor” which is also painted a Bright Silver. The adaptor is very well designed for one to manipulate to make the buttons of the saber line up. I had it on and alighed in less than a minute using the included Allen wrench.

One aspect of the original weapon design that I was hoping the FFX would retain are the rubber rings that are placed at 5 locations on the saber hilt. With the FFX we only get 4 out of the 5 being actual rubber “o” rings. Something to note about these is that many LE owners have had an issue of the rubber degrading and the rings splitting and coming apart. Hopefully we will not have that problem with the FFX rings since it was designed to be held and used.

WORKING REVIEW
When I first picked up the half or battle-damaged saber the first thing I noticed was the covertech clip was in the way of my grip.

Not a big problem since it could be removed with a few turns of a screwdriver. I also noticed what many others have stated about the weight of the saber being mostly in the blade. I can only surmise that the Darth Maul being designed mainly as a Double Bladed saber some concessions had to be made in the weight department, throwing off the weight of a half saber. Once again, not a worry since I would mostly be using the DM FFX in its Full form.
The size of the Full Maul takes some getting use to. At 7ft 4inches from tip to tip, this is definitely an outside saber. Unless you have an open gymnasium or auditorium for you to swing this deadly saber around in. It takes a bit of strength to get the saber moving into a spin but once you get it going it is a Force to be reckoned with.
The On/Off switch is not that easy to turn on at first. Im sure with some use, it may loosen up a bit but it takes quite a bit of tension to get the button to move. I also noticed that the material used for the On/Off button is different from the nonfuctional red button on the saber.

You can see that the On/Off switch has a "flat" reflection to the face of it. Whereas the non-functional one has a "stereo" reflection to the face of the button.
The Blade is a very bright Red. With the use of a semi-tinted diffuser we get a deeper Red than the Vader TESB version (http://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php?topic=1451.0).
The Sound, although reused from the previous Sith sabers is still well done. The ingnition is loud and crisp. The idle hum of the Full Maul definitely sets it apart. The overlapping sounds give this saber its own uniqueness. There are Four motion activated sound effects(slow buzz, fast buzz, slash and double-slash) that are well calibrated and not as easily activated like some past sabers. The deactivation,as with the Vader, begins about a second before the blade begins to deactivate.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I’m very excited with this saber. Being a fan of Maul since the release of Episode I, I am very pleased with the outcome of this FFX. It is very well done and executed. Even though the sounds seem to be reused from the previous Sith sabers, that is really not a big deal to me. Just the fact that it HAS sounds is enough. The sounds are a bit muted with the saber in Full mode, but it is a small sacrifice to be able to FINALLY wield a double-bladed lightsaber. Speaking of the Full Maul, what a wonder it is to finally hold the weapon of such a dangerous Sith in my hands. Holding it out in front of myself brings me back to the moment when we see Maul ignite his Full saber before he goes into battle with those two pesky Jedi.
Realistically, the saber is missing TWO vital components. One being the Qui-Gon Jinn FFX and the other being the Obi-Wan FFX from The Phantom Menace. So, Master Replicas we come to you. I ask you to complete our Darth Maul sabers for us....no, I BEG you to complete our Darth Maul sabers for us!

Wow Anakin yet another great review. Now you have the Darth Maul to add to your full collection. Good idea to wait since the darth maul double blade is going down price wise. btw, about the 'Made In China' thing, is the whole FX is made in china, or only the coupler? It seems odd, not to say tht products from China aint good, but it takes away the authentic feeling of the fx..

I believe everything from MR nowadays is made in China. It's not that odd of an occurrence.

Everyone here knows how much I enjoy doing these reviews. This one, from start to finish, took me about 5 hours. From taking the pictures(of which I took over 40 actual pics but most for packing reference purposes) to writing the review. to downloading the pics to my PC, to uploading them to the net to then creating the post and revising it about 8 times hahah. It was a labor of love.
I have to say that I have really been enjoying the DM FFX in its Full and BD version. Whenever I reach over to it and I feel that cold metal when I touch it, I can almost imagine the Dark Side energy held within such an evil weapon.
The Maul I would have to say is my #3 saber of all time. (Luke's Being 1 and 2)

It's so fine that we could see the differents of colors of the sveral parts of the hilt.( the emitter seems darker doesn't it?).

I always respect Anakin's opinions and his reviews always give a superb impression of the sabers.
The pics this time are exceptionally good and there are certainly plenty of them.
I am tempted by the Maul FX, especially after reading this review, but I am afraid the bank manager says 'no'.

A little update on the use of the saber.
Since I have gotten the DM FFX I have been using it quite a bit. Taking it outside everyday for almost 2 weeks and practicing spins and such.
Just thought I would share what happens when you can't put this saber down and you use it as it was inteded

Its a minor wear issue. The Silver paint on the Coupler comes off rather easily. The majority taken off was just from the skin of my hand rubbing against it. I say its a minor wear issue because it is on a piece that can easily be repainted.
But this might be an area where MR can change something in the future.

Last time I checked, Obi will not come with a coupler. Other parts of the Maul didnt encounter that problem AFAIK.

of course the Obi Wan FX will not come with a coupler ;) Obi Wan doesnt wield a double bladed saber.
the imperfection of the coupler is part of the Maul fx story, so its worth mentioning btw.

yeah Hang Tuah Kenobi, I thinking about getting two obi wan's and wait for a coupler to come out so I can make a double. The Obi wan fx's would make a great double bladed lightsaber for a jedi but I'm always for the Darth Maul anytime since it's my most favored saber now. :)

Like I said this is not a big deal with the coupler.
Since it can be VERY EASILY repainted (unlike the Gold of the Anakin) it should not be a reason to not get the saber.
I'm thinking about removing the paint and seeing about trying to polish it to match the rest of the saber and then repainting the faux rubber band with some "rubberized" black paint. I'm not sure how the polishing will look with the material that the coupler is made out of, but we will see. If it doesn't look good enough, then I just get a can of Bright Silver and some clearcoat and VIOLA!

the only other part of the Maul you might see this is on the "arrow feather" section of the saber. But I don't see that being a problem as I hardly ever place my hands near that area.

The Maul saber is definitiy cool, just got mine today. One thing my friend was suggesting/asking if there was a better way to couple the sabers together. It would be really cool if they used a hard magnet to connect the two. That way you wouldnt have to unscrew and put on the single battery cover.

My wife and I had to go to New Jersey this past week (there was a death in our family, her Aunt Claire "Returned To The Force"). We had a road trip from South Florida/Deerfield Beach to New Brunswich New Jersey. While we were there we went to F.A.O. Schartz (the Toy Store from the movie BIG with Tom Hanks). There was a GIGANTIC Star Wars section with ALL the FX's: Master Windu, Jedi Anakin, Sith Lord Darth Maul and Darth Vader and when I say GIGANTIC I mean GIGANTIC. My mouth actually fell open. If anyone has the opportunit to go to New York anytime soon make sure you check it out...

Oh and I had the PRIVILAGE to hold the Sith Lord Darth Maul and it is an AWSOME saber. I'm a Jedi and I don't want to buy 1 but it was AWSOME to hold nevertheless...

I unscrewed all the knurled knobs that could be removed from it today while I was outside practicing and it is so much easier on my hands that way, hahah.
Funny thing...one of the sabers had some sort of threadlock adhesive used on the knobs and the other half of the saber didn't!

i was really turned off by the maul saber cause of the vader (stolen) sounds. but after watching ray park spinning that thing around...its starting to grow on me. im still not sold on it though, lol

once upon a time I used rechargeables in my FFX's. Then I found that they are just not strong enough to fully light the FX. Even regular alkalines are better than rechargeables as far as the quality of output you get from them.

the lithium battery shouldnot make the saber any brighter than a high end alkaline such as an M3 or an ultimate. where lithium comes into the equation is in terms of longevity rather than brightness. if you use your saber every day for more than say 10mins, go with lithiums. otherwise alkaline energizer ultimates or duracell M3 will do the job just fine. i have ultimates in my maul saber and it was in near constant use being switched on and off for almost two hours on halloween. it still looks great.

the lithium battery shouldnot make the saber any brighter than a high end alkaline such as an M3 or an ultimate. where lithium comes into the equation is in terms of longevity rather than brightness. if you use your saber every day for more than say 10mins, go with lithiums. otherwise alkaline energizer ultimates or duracell M3 will do the job just fine. i have ultimates in my maul saber and it was in near constant use being switched on and off for almost two hours on halloween. it still looks great.
