Title: The Black Mamba - a joint Wat Tambor/slothfurnace endeavor
Post by: Acerocket on November 23, 2013, 10:41:02 AM
When I started in this hobby, I made my first lightsabers on a manual 3-in-1 Chinese machine.  As my creativity flowed and my experience grew, I found that my machine limited what my creativity wanted to do.  So I invested in a CNC mill.  The first saber I made with the new mill was Cobin Das's Killer Penny.  Yes, you read that right, the Killer Penny was made entirely on a CNC mill - there was no lathe involved.   Well, when you jump into the hobby and one of the first things you create becomes what amounts to a legend, it's hard to top that.  Over the years, I have expanded my shop, acquired new equipment, learned new tricks, and machined some of the most popular sabers in our community.  Through all that, the one thing that rings true for me is that I am always trying to push myself to do 'bigger and better'.  I am not in competition with anyone but myself - and for years, my main goal has been to try and create a saber that is as recognizable, if not moreso, as the Killer Penny.

I have had ideas come and go.  I have started easily a dozen plus different models and concepts always to scrap them.  I have ideas and visions in my head, but a hard time getting them 'on paper' so to speak.  I have always admired slothfurnaces artistic abilities and his work.  I look at his work and marvel at it's beauty.  So, I reached out to slothfurnace and asked if he would be willing to help me get my ideas on paper to give me a frame of reference to work with and model from.  After some email exchanges where I gave sloth my ideas, this is what he gave me:

It's taken almost a year of design, discussions with Brad, changes, and refinements and this is what I ended up with:

In talking with slothfurnace, the decision was made to offer an extremely limited number of this design for sale to the general public.  There will only be 7 Black Mamba sabers made.  One for me, one for sloth and five available for sale.

Details of this run:
These will be empty sabers designed to utilize the Plecter Labs CFLS (string blade Crystal Focus board).  They will include all machined parts, stainless steel hosing/tubing, LEMO connector (since I have to machine parts to modify it), hardware, anodizing and any other finishing.  I will also be supplying some very thin 30 gage wiring to help with the wiring of the saber.  I will supply the recharge port, RICE port, switches and speaker.  It will be up to the owner to supply the 18350 batteries, li-ion circuit board and CFLS board (but I will supply links to the parts I chose to fit the design properly).  You will also need to supply your chosen crystal chamber crystal and SMD LEDs (it was designed to use 5 per sloth's request, but you can use whatever you want).  Again, I will supply links to the parts I used in the design.  Installs are not for the faint of heart.  If you can install this saber, you will be elevated from the level of Cram-Fu master to Cramuri (Master of Samuri level Cram-Fu).  This is not a saber you will install in a few hours - it will take planning and thought.

Well, as you can imagine, given the limited number, complexity of this design, and cost of raw materials and finishing cost, the price will not be cheap.  I am setting the price at $3200 per empty saber plus Paypal fees.  This does not include shipping fees to you.  Because I am anticipating this project taking at least a year to complete, I am going to do something a little different with payments.  A down payment of $500.00 will be due to ensure your place on this run.  I will machine the saber in components.  After each component assembly (spine, pommel can, rib section, crystal chamber and emitter - 5 components) is finished machining, I will ask for another $500.00 payment be made.  I will most likely hold off on anodzing until the very last part is machined to ensure that the anodizing is consistent throughout the saber.  When I receive all the parts back from finishing and do final assembly of the saber for shipping, I will ask for the final $200.00 plus shipping cost.  Advance notice that a payment is coming up will be given and I will give you time to get your payment made.  You can expect payments to be due about every 2-3 months or so.   Please bear this in mind when deciding if you want to participate in this run.  I will either keep a thread here to detail progress as it progresses for people to follow.

In addition to the saber itself, each run particiapant will receive copies of the original artwork slothfurnace drew for this design.  I have the initial sketches and they will be going back to sloth to be signed soon.
This run will be open till December 31 or when all the spots are filled.  I will begin work in the new year starting with the spine components.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Mother of god thats going to be one crazy saber. You should make a coupler just for the heck of it, just so all our heads can explode when we see a double bladed one of these.

looking at the pics the din connector looks very close to the cut out slot on the emitter
would this possibly lead to a dull area behind/under the led strip? as the led strip would need a din connector fitted on the end of the blade
you may see a dull or unlit portion in the cut out slot at the very base of the blade

That is the din connector inside the blade.  The othe half of teh connector is screwed into the emitter and you don't see it in the pictures.  All that is taken into account.

thats insane........   whoa         I would like to add to this thread.  I have had the Killer penny in my possession for months, and working on it/modifying it/ adding to it's legendariness.  (if that is even a word)   Wat and Sloth are  by far the most skilled SMITHS there is in this hobby.  I see the work that Sloth and WAT are doing  and it begs the question??  How can you even top that?  You can't, how much more exciting does a saber get..  It's about the craziest thing I have ever seen.    I think the concept that Sloth and WAT have in the MAMBA  has further  pushed the envelope on how far a saber can be taken.. I know that working on the Penny  ( in the shadow of WAT )  has given me white hairs..  The complexity of it when Corbin handed me  WAT'S  work  made me think "OH BOY"  why did I say yes to this?????

So  this I can't wait to see.

I am only selling empty sabers - I have not, nor do I have plans to arrange for installs on these.  That will up to the buyer to handle.  You can install it yourself, or contact one of the fine smiths in the Mining Colony or whoever you want to enquire about installs.  Sloth is doing his, I am doing mine, but beyond that, I haven't asked anyone to help me on these.  I hope this is not leading to confusion.  The completetion date is over a yar away.  I don't know if anyone wants to commit this early, but you might want to see about lining something up if you are intreested in seeking an installer.  I will see what I can do to help line up installers, but I can't make any promises.

I would like to applaud Wat and Sloth for coming up with a completely different approach to saber designs. It's like a "inside out" saber, or a full reveal and also functional. Very cool indeed and I can see this being used as inspiration in many sabers to come. I would love to have a saber that is always in reveal mode, and yet fully functional. Bravo guys.

Of all the sabers I have seen, this one is by far the most ingenutive and innovative of all. I say that keeping in mind all giant sabers of past too. The complexity, yet simplicity in design is perfectly executed. The detail and thought put into this will not only be one to remember for years, but also set the new standard in Elite Sabers.

Well done Wat and Brad for doing such an excellent job. While I will never probably own one of these, I am so excited for the folks able to get in on this run.  8)

Thank you everyone for your kind words regarding this saber.  I was honored to work so closely with Wat on this, and it was refreshing to bring someone else's ideas to paper.  It's not something I do normally, if ever, and having Wat to bounce design ideas off of greatly facilitated this design.  From beginning to end, I knew this would be a unique challenge, and if we pulled it off, it would be worth the effort.

I seriously can't wait to hold this one.   I will be designing some kind of display for it, and it will sit proudly as a testament to shared effort.

Wat is awesome to work with, from emails to phone conversations over the length of design time, so I want to thank him for allowing me to tag along on this adventure.

Those of you who get in on this, I'll be getting with you as soon as all the sketches get going to find out what format works best for everyone.  I'll sign and number each print.

Awesome design here. Very interesting endeavor.

Are the parts all aluminum? It looks like in the pics there might be some brass or copper parts?
Or are the colored bits to be anodized since you mention finishing parts in the first post?

Thank you

Awesome design here. Very interesting endeavor.

Or are the colored bits to be anodized since you mention finishing parts in the first post?

Thank you

The main spine halves will be either stainless steel or chrome/nickel plated steel.  I am still undecided on how to go.  Stainless is tougher to cut and I need to order some new tooling for it.  Then it has to be polished.  Steel is a little easier to cut, but I still need new tooling for it also.  It also needs to be polished and then plated.  Material wise, stainless steel is a bit higher than regular steel.  Tooling costs are pretty much identical.  Polishing will most likely be the same.  The plating will add cost the steel option.  I just need to decide if I want to try and machine stainless steel (which I have never done) or do the steel which I have done before.

All gold parts are brass.  The black and red parts are anodized aluminum.  The bent tubings are stainless steel braided line, stainless steel conduit,a nd stainless steel tubing.  There may be one or two un-anodized aluminum parts that are not visible when the saber is fully assembled, but I can't recall off hand.

This is the most original design I have ever saw in 16 years or lightsaber interest, to me Slothfurnace and Wat are a dreamteam.
I would like the Orbitalmachining to be more known since his exceptional work is more discret but distinctive from other lightsaber "specialist" that spam my computer all the day and are popular with crap.
Sloth please stop to burn my eyes lol, I would like an artbook to be made I must say...
I'll watch this topic for the love of true art, gents.

Edit: ho and as I'm thinking about it, this saber could deserve to appears in a videogame for a badass like Darth Malgus: clearly machine, barebone, cold and merciless.
Yep, it would have been a perfect Vader saber...

For anyone in on this run, here are some saber tags you can use. Depending on your planned blade color and what you want the tag to say, there are some variations:

If this run is still a go I might join.
The metal combination is awsome!
Brass with black parts look amazing together.
Based on the date at witch your original post was.
Its been at least 6 months, so if this one is estimated
To be completed in about a year thin sounds like November
Or December.

I might like to join this run.
I have sent you a PM

Hi
For the CC what size would be recommended?

Are you asking what size crystal?  Or what size is the chamber itself?  If you asking about the crystal, it's all about personal preference, but the saber was designed to house a crystal about .25" in diameter (if you have a nice hex shaped crystal, about .21" across the flats) by about .9" long.  You can always modify the chamber parts yourself if you wish and put a larger or odd shaped crystal in yourself.  I can't really give you much more information until i have actually machined the parts and held it in my hands - right now, it's all just 3D models.

Those are some fine crystals.  A bit pricey for my tastes, but they look real nice.  Size wise, they are slender and a little smaller than I mentioned (3-4mm is .12-.15" across and 20mm is about .8" long).  They would probably look real nice in the saber.

It's really up to you what you want - my advice would be to wait until you have the saber in hand to see what you have to work with.  But if you want to pick up a crystal, I won't stop you - just remember that I don't want to be held responsible if it doesn't fit.

Wow, those are startlingly expensive to be put in a saber, lol.

I have seen lots of promising looking and affordable crystals on etsy. Anyone looking for crystals should take a look there! They have all kinds and cuts available from numerous sellers around the world.

Correct thise are expensive, this is not your average Stone,
Emeralds are expensive.
He does sell much cheaper stones like quartz.
There is a guy on IRA that Had an industrial Diamond put in His Saber.
Boy I bet that is way up there ;)

What ever I get I am going for green.
I think its going to be ausome!

Agreed, waiting for the Saber first is a good idea :)

Hi Wat

I have a question about the intended SB.
Sounds like you have a CF-LS in mind.
Will a connector be provided for detachable blades?
Lastly would a CF7 with Cex fit?

Thank!

Those are some nicely colored emeralds. The green tormouline is nice as well. I really like the color of yellow tormouline myself but it gets pricey for a decent sized rough stone.

Post by: Acerocket on September 15, 2014, 02:57:13 PM
Well, it's been a long time since this run was closed.  I've had some ups, and some (real low) downs.  But I think it's time for an update.

3/8" x 2" x 14" 303 stainless steel flat bar ready for some cutting.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9904_zps3d0566a5.jpg&hash=6826e6148189143177d92ae695139206a1e1d851) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9904_zps3d0566a5.jpg.html)

2 hours and 48 minutes later.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9905_zps849cf6bb.jpg&hash=4fcc2d86cade74eae7537b21a6b10ae214eefacc) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9905_zps849cf6bb.jpg.html)

Repeat 15 more times.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9906_zpsc537f081.jpg&hash=e245dd9201378d0140e0fd4241470281a8334601) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9906_zpsc537f081.jpg.html)

Yeah, but it can't be that easy. Even buying stress relieved bar stock (long, and expensive, story on how I figured out that I needed stress relieved 303 stainless bar), the machining still caused some warping - about .2" over 14" length.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9907_zps569ba806.jpg&hash=c24240c7c90ab822f3b0231a085b38f622bf6ba4) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9907_zps569ba806.jpg.html)

So, how do you hold 14" long warped parts to machine the other side? You make yourself some custom soft jaws.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9908_zps847a170f.jpg&hash=c79500d77cc3353ab8f73a7495064477e904e3d6) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9908_zps847a170f.jpg.html)

Part pocket cut and holes drilled and tapped.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9909_zpsfc006fa2.jpg&hash=08b6ad01887a4f481aeeab2965b66d32f9b4d291) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9909_zpsfc006fa2.jpg.html)

Now can you figure out why there might be drilled and tapped holes?
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9909_zpsfc006fa2.jpg&hash=08b6ad01887a4f481aeeab2965b66d32f9b4d291) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9909_zpsfc006fa2.jpg.html)

Move the clamps...
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9914_zps11cbf787.jpg&hash=224b8dc5708c1b4fe4a7060918f18ea70ad20048) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9914_zps11cbf787.jpg.html)

...and cut some more.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9915_zps0207ae59.jpg&hash=fa3e11f8b03c196cfe3387c79883f87482ef452f) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9915_zps0207ae59.jpg.html)

Then take a skim cut with a face mill and chamfer.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9917_zpsb58fee85.jpg&hash=03f23df3ae700681edeeeef0f2c6695585409b85) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9917_zpsb58fee85.jpg.html)

At this point, you are probably asking the same thing I asked myself.  "...If the part warped when I cut the first side, maybe it will be flat after cutting the second side..."  Well, the answer to that is no.  And if life isn't cruel enough, it not only didn't go flat, it warped about .2" the other way.

Well, that's half of the halves. Oh and for those who might be curious, from 3 pounds, .6 ounces to 3.8 ounces - that's a 92% metal removal amount from that flat bar.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9919_zps9456f540.jpg&hash=b3dea2e1c9a345698760ee55732b101c77a7b831) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9919_zps9456f540.jpg.html)

How about some brass jigsaw puzzle action?
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9927_zpsac8c0538.jpg&hash=f137d8f613096a1dffe816ecec132d7cd6647cf8) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9927_zpsac8c0538.jpg.html)

Parted from the flat stock and ready for the second side.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9928_zps4a51726f.jpg&hash=437280c89e9e7667fbd414ea007e8a111fff37c0) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9928_zps4a51726f.jpg.html)

Almost done. Just need to machine some holes in the front end for screw clearance.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9929_zpsda52a90b.jpg&hash=803027b67efb5ce557bab726c49c0095003f94b7) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9929_zpsda52a90b.jpg.html)

All wrapped up and ready for the next section to get made.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi726.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww266%2Facerocket%2FBlack%2520Mamba%2FIMG_9930_zpsea040cee.jpg&hash=b40ab21231fee4157d8646499b1b11fcd3247233) (http://s726.photobucket.com/user/acerocket/media/Black%20Mamba/IMG_9930_zpsea040cee.jpg.html)

Well, that's it for now.  In a few weeks, I will start planning on the next section, probably the pommel can and start it when I have some time.

Good question Link, actually, looking over the introduction of this saber I could not see the length. Might well have missed it though. Viewing the graphics of how this saber might look was amazing enough, but starting to see even just a few pieces in 'the flesh' starts to hint at how phenomenal this will look finished. I can still only imagine, but...WOW, also, I would be very interested in hearing the story behind your decisions for material choices (though by the sounds of it they might be a little painful to retell) Those of us not skilled in machining probably have no idea the true amount of work and effort that goes into just a single piece on these works of art. But hearing the thought processes and discoveries made might help us appreciate just what those in one of your runs end up with.
Also, might I congratulate you on your new son. Wishing yourself and family much joy at the wonderful news.

Title: Re: The Black Mamba - a joint Wat Tambor/slothfurnace endeavor
Post by: Acerocket on September 16, 2014, 07:40:44 AM
To answer some of the questions posed...
Length is about 13-1/4" without the 'fangs'.  The 'fangs' will add about another 1-1/2" to the front end.  A little longer than some sabers, but not to long given the design.  Diameter wise, it varies.  1.5" diameter pommel can, 1.45" diameter ribbed section, 1.1" diameter crystal chamber and 1.425" diameter emitter.  Roughly the same size as MHS parts.

Material selection.  Well, with a unique saber, I didn't want to go with 'standard' materials (all aluminum).  As the design of the spine took shape, it became obvious that aluminum wouldn't be a good choice.  So many holes, notches, bends, etc in a .15" thick piece that I thought aluminum might break.  So I thought about stainless steel.  It looks different than aluminum, more of a dark grey than the shiny, almost white of aluminum.  It has a 'warmth' to it that I like.  I thought about going with plain mild steel and having it nickel plated until I got prices back on plating.  I like brass when it is used in moderation.  The original design had a lot more brass pieces on it, but after looking at it, I reduced the number of parts in brass so brass was more of a highlight than a major material medium.  I did not want any raw aluminum so all aluminum parts will be anodized.  I picked black because I think black compliments the brass very well.  I considered the 'burgundy' red anodize for the main parts, but it did not look as good as the black did against the brass.  I do like the 'burgundy' red and used it for some trim parts, and I am still toying with colors to tweak the design more to my liking.  But it probably won't change too much.

As for will there be any more for sale - hard to say.  There is one extra, but it has already had some minor damage to it that may make it not suitable for sale.  All I can say at the present is that I am making 8 sabers in case I need parts down the road so there may, or may not be one available when the run is completed.  Beyond that, there are no plans to make any others, nor am I actively planning on have any available to auction off.  It is one of those 'wait and see' kind of things.

Hello Good Fx saber folks
Just want to inform that I have sold my spot to NeptuneTQ.
I'd've liked to stay on the run, but alas that small matter of money...
All the best to everyone on the run and of course to the newest addition to the black mamba family: NeptuneTQ
Daniel aka Dansamir

Thank you so much Dansamir!  I honestly didn't think anyone was really gonna reply to me when I posted that message, but I'm excited for this :) I've always regretted missing the Legacy run since I was a huge fan of the Killer Penny back in the day, but this will make up for it :)

No updates.  Other than I have completed the TFUII run, Obi ROTS run, Skinnyflex run, and I am in the process of shipping out the Obi TPM run sabers.  That will leave me with the only the Black Mamba run to concentrate on in the future.  I will be getting into it as soon as I am able and hope to make some good progress once I get rolling.

Time for an update...  All the machine work is completed, 95%+ of the cleanup, washing, deburring, polishing, etc has been completed, all parts needing to be anodized have been sent and returned, assembly has begun.  Run participants have been contacted and are aware of the next steps.  I have one saber almost complete (some small detail pieces yet to add) but will wait until it is complete before posting pictures.  But here are some teasers...

Wow, wow, wow. Saber looks like an intricate jewel fused with machine. Looks a bit less curved than I thought it would be from the sketches and images. Actually prefer the subtle curve of the real life version. What a triumph!
