short version:  scientists have created a new kind of light by combining photons from 2 different lasers.

normally, photons can't interact with each other : the two beams of light will simply cross paths and pass straight through each other.

but scientists at MIT & Harvard have found a way to cause photons to combine with each other through quantum entanglement...

...Now that photons have been shown to interact, they could be used in a variety of new applications.

It's possible that one day scientists could make the photons interact in such a way that they can create real-life light sabers, or beams of light that 'pull or push on each other...making a luminous stream,' MIT said.

(like Cyclops in the X-men -- light cannon bazooka)

"The Star Wars story is really the tragedy of Darth Vader. That is the story.
Once Vader dies, he doesn't come back to life, the Emperor doesn't get cloned, and Luke doesn't get married..."
