How DOES a lightsaber actually work?

This might have been asked before, so redirect me if it has been.

I've been looking up some sites and none  of them seem to give a concise explanation to the inner workings of a lightsaber. I am not talking about MR lightsabers since those are pretty easy to figure out how they work. I am talking about the real deal from Star Wars.

so like... how does a lightsaber actually work? how is the blade created from the focussing crystals with power coursing through them?

if anyone has a site which he/she can point me to with a possible theory on how these noble weapons work, please let me know. ^^

I think what happens is a power core kinda like a battery focuses an energy beam through a first crystal to make te beam then a secondary crystal to focus the beam into the laser sword.
