Penta cree setup for StarCraft 2 Warp Blade
« on: April 13, 2018, 10:08:05 AM »
Hey guys I'm working on this warp blade and I came across a problem I cannot solve on my own. Got this PCB and 5x green XPE cree LEDS I soldered on a pan with solder paste. All LEDS are arranged in such a way that anodes are on the same side as + sign and arrows underneath point to the - side.

Here you can find spec sheets for both products

https://www.maritex.com.pl/product/attachment/39482/NX-5CX36-XP.pdf

So the problem is simple - after connecting the battery to both ends (2 cables per end soldered together) it doesn't light up. What did do wrong and how can I fix it? Please halp :).

Ummm, those probably won’t work at all. Does the thing you have the LEDs attached to wire them in series or parallel??

I find your arguments vague and unconvincing.

Quiet! *Slap* And there’s a fresh one if you mouth off again.

Not sure if I understand correctly but the spec sheet suggest that "in series" is the answer.

So, you ONLY need about an 18V battery that can push out 1 Amp (give or take). Good Luck!!

You need 18 volts (well, ideally 18.5 actually) but you don't need 5A. 1A will be enough.
You could use 5 3.7v batteries in series, but a boost converter might be better. (smaller)
It may even be possible to control the LED directly from a sound board. The plus side of the voltage would just go directly to the LED. Then it just depends on what the FETs on the board are rated for.

Shameless plug: Teensysaber boards use FETs rated for 30 volts.

I'll second Prof on this and extend that if you already have a soundboard you can still just use a mosfet to control power to the LED.  Just chose a signal line from the board to run to the gate.  You could also use a TIP42 or similar, like many have used with old hasbro boards.

I use NB V4 which holds up to 5V so good to know about that MOSFET solution, thanks :)

The nice thing is that the high voltage means a lower current so your wiring, etc, is less of a concern so long as everything is rated to exceed your 18v.  You'll fond most things are 25v+, but best to make sure anyway.

The nb uses mosfet too and they are rated 20v nominal. So all you would need is on of those traco 1A "sugar" regulators (about 1x1x0.5 cm) to power the sound board while driving that 18v /1A load
