Boot Sound Help?
« on: April 02, 2016, 05:08:42 PM »
Evening everyone! Hoping some of the font gurus could help me with an issue I have. I have been attempting to create my own boots, some of which work perfectly. However, a couple of boots are giving quite the fuss.

I have attempted to make some boots that are the required .wav format, but do not seem to work when placed on the SD card. Checked the bit size, and one shows as 16.3kb(71kbps), which I thought was too large, but have used larger with no problems. Example, a boot that came on a boot CD shows a size of 367kb(352kbps).

Can anyone assist me with this? Board is a CS2.0 if it makes any difference.

Hi Mithric,

No guru here but I've been doing a lot of this recently.

The large file size suggests to me a format problem, unless its an especially long sound clip.
It's easy to forget to check if you're dealing with lots of samples.

By force of habit I work with a much higher quality than needed for a saber and then bounce it down as a final step. Sometimes I forget or miss one :(

It needs to be 22050hz and 16bit mono. Does that help?

If you want, you're welcome to send me the files and I can check through them, or if you aren't sure how to go about altering them but would like to then I can talk you through audacity.

Files were altered from Audacity and saved as 16bit mono. However, now that I think about it I believe they were saved as 4400hz. I tried changing the hz before saving, but it seemed to "stretch" the audio clip and a clip that was only 1-2 seconds seemed to take much longer to play through.

I'll tinker with it some more tonight after work and try changing to your recommended hz setting.

It should be 22,050Hz not 22,010Hz.
Thank you Photobucket for the best Sig ever!

Yes, that's right. I actually corrected the typo once I was back home quite some hours before your post :)  It is not possible to set it to 22010Hz at least not in audacity, so no problem.

Fat fingers, small phone and moving train was turning me into DARTH Baconwizard trying to edit lol

AH yes I recognise that symptom and its a bad bit of design imo...

EDIT: I have made a step by step tutorial, since you are not the first to ask this very question recently.

I have been tinkering with some custom boots sounds, too.  I can't seem to get rid of this annoying pop/crackle that plays at the end of the sound.  The levels are good in Audacity, and in the software the file plays without the pop/crackle.

But as soon as I play the file off the PC V3.0 I get that nasty pop/crackle.  What I am missing?  :embarrassed:

There is no emotion, there is only peace.

I have had a similar issue, and asked about it on another thread.

One possibility is any metadata attached to the file. Editing Software would recognise what it is and know it ain't audio in most cases but a saber sound card might not. I am currently convinced this is the right answer.

Depending how you have audacity set up, there should be an option to include/change/clear the artist, date, notes etc when you export it. Might be worth a try. I'll be testing mine out later.

Edit: In my case, it was indeed metadata. Deleting it solved the problem completely.
