Custom Control Box
« on: December 07, 2017, 02:52:09 PM »
Hey everyone,

Does anyone know how to make a custom control box? I’ve been searching and can’t find how (especially without nice machine equipment). I know TCSS has some blanks and it’s large box that people customize, but I’m looking more for a build from scratch kind of thing. I really appreciate everyone’s help!

I'm also looking for a custom box for a build. We are in the same boat, my friend. :)

Hey Raktus - what tools do you have access to? Do you have dremel/rotary tool? Hand or bench drill? Vice for holding work?

Do you have a hilt or hilt section already that you want to fit it too?

Are you thinking of something low profile or more of a 'block' like on Luke ROTJ?

I think the more specific info you can provide, the more it will spark ideas from people and they'll be able to help

Hey Sethski,

I have my hilt parts ordered. They are all MHS extension pieces or double male pieces. I have a rotary tool and will have a hobby vice and drill to use. No more significant tools than that. I was hoping to get a lower profile box instead of a block type one. Maybe something closer to this  http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Activation-box-style-20-P984.aspx or http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Activation-box-style-16-P695.aspx in terms of profile. I’m hoping to house 2 Tactile type switches and a a slide switch.

I made a control box from a solid brass bar with nothing but a sanding drum on the drill.  It takes time that way, but it works.

I'd second using sanding drums with a regular hand held power drill to make a curve for underside of pieces like boxes and covertecs. It takes care as not super precise (in my experience) but did the job with a bit of hand sanding and filing. I picked up one of these type kits and used the 38mm drum for a recent build Drum Sanding Kit - Toolstation
