RussRep V2 weathering
« on: September 26, 2013, 07:48:49 PM »
I bought this empty hilt from Timo several weeks ago.  It started out with the plain black anodized finish, but it just didn't look like a V2 to me.  It took me several tries to paint it and "weather" it just right.  Comments welcome!

That looks really good! I love the weathering below the clamp and on the wind vane. I think it could use a little more on the emitter, but thats just me! and of course there is the debate about weathering the pommel and all, but thats a whole other story lol. Overall awesome job!

What process did you use to get these results?

Vercify, I started by sanding off most of the anodizing.  Then I primed and spray painted a few coats of black Krylon and a couple of days later I very SLOWLY started chipping off paint.  Then I repeated the whole process of sanding, painting, scraping two more times because I kept scraping off too much paint and then I would have too start all over again.

On the wind vane, I used metallic copper paint, clear coated it, scraped it off, then painted black over top.  I didn't let the black completely dry before I started to VERY gently scrape and sand off the black without removing too much copper in the process.

You did a very nice job there ;)
The wind vane looks nice indeed!

I'd also have done a bit more on the emitter, and less on the grenade... but that's just personnal taste :)
Congrats on acheiving such a nice looking saber!

Awesome, I will keep this in mind for when I attempt to weather an upcoming build :)

Thanks again!

You were right to do new weathering.
I had several of these banies in thehands for fx conversion (ID enlargment, new choke, new emitter etc etc) and the original weathering on anodisation is not really terrific,it's for from a good weathering after black painting.

I'm working on one right now and slothfurnace's is still in progress I believe.  It won't hold a CF without major lathework though.
