Bertuzzi’s "Amphibolia" (MHS - CF V4.0)
« on: December 03, 2010, 03:54:59 PM »
Hi everyone,

while I’m working on the Mediator I want to show you the first proper CF-saber I made a few month ago.
So this was my first draft of the saber.

I wanted to have a simple design and it should also be no-frills so that it would be handy on stage. Unfortunately Tim from the TCSS told me he wouldn’t make custom blade holders. So I had to look for an alternative.

The parts:

Then there was something special I wanted to have. I wanted the saber to be separable in few seconds. I asked JQ for help and that’s what they made for me:

It works very well until now although the srew is a litte unpractial, a push button with a spring would be better. I hope I can replace this coupling with one with a push button. Nevertheless it’s great.

The parts to build a chassis for the board and the batteries:

I started soldering the battery pack. I encased it in heat shrink to have good isolation.

Now I drilled holes for the switches and the recharge port.

After that I started abrading a 32mm PVC tube down to 1,25 so it should fit into the MHS extension.

Now I drilled holes in the chassis for switches, RP and the Covertec screw.

The I cut the PVC tube to the right lenght and tested the hub of the switches.

Next I cut a board to mount the CF and the batteries.

It should look like this:

Unfortunately I the heat shrink was to big for the ribbed extension, so I had to remove it and just fix the batteries with tape.

Now I glued the switches into the chassis

Testing.

Everything to do now was the final assembly.

That’s it. A very simple but handy saber. Until now I did some modifications. I will report on that later. Good photos will follow, too.

Comments requested :)

neat saber and a CF to boot! :o nice coupler as well how much did you pay for it? and is it compatible with all MHS parts from tccs?

If it is compatible with one, it should be compatible with all.

I like the saber, and the coupler (a pushbutton would be nice) People just keep showing up with CF all over the place...when did I miss out?  ;)

Thank you for the feedback!

I paid 70£ for it and it's compatible with all MHS parts.

Well, I have the CFs for more than a year now, I'm also waitiing to get a V5 ;)

Here's a modification I did.
Due to the shortage of space and to make the saber less heavy I decided to replace the NiMH batteries with one 18650 Li-ion, which would be high-capacity enough to drive a Seoul P4.
Therefor I had to make a new board to mount the li-ion. I also unsoldered all the wires. I had some … discussions with Erv and he told me it would be better to use quick connectors on the board instead of soldering on the board every time. It turned out exceptional but until now I'm quite satisfied with this solution. It's much easier to disassemble the saber now.

New board with slot for the li-ion.

Testing.

After fixing the li-ion with tape and mounting the board with double sided adhesive tape.

Total chassis complex.

Some good pics of the finished saber will follow.

Although it has been a while since the last update I don't want to hold back the final video of the saber.

Enjoy!

You got some serious saber skills man, and I mean both in building and in moves! The staff looks great and the separator is nice too.

If only this had either a 5w or RGGB 10w... :)

Thank you for all your comments :)
The problem with 5W oder 10W LEDs is the power supply in that saber. I use a 18650er li-ion cell so I have a runtime of more than 1,5 hours. For two of the 18650 unfortunately there is no space and 14650s do not have enough capacity for me.
Well, I would really like to come to the SSC next summer but I'm afraid it won't be possible for me due to financial reasons as well as that's in the time I'm writing my bachelor thesis. I hope I can join one of the next camps which will hopefully take place.
