Blade film and diffuser questions.
« on: June 16, 2007, 05:09:08 AM »
Ok Iam trying to figure out what material to use for a film/diffuser for a blade so that I can keep alot more of the light in the blade.

What Iam trying to do is eliminate the fact that my saber lights up a room when a lightsaber isent susposed to do that.

Its susposed to be a beam of light that dosent emit to the suroundings.

Anyone out there that might have an idea as to what I could use to keep alot of the light thats in my blade to stay there?

It really depends on what look you are going for Alias.

A single or double wrap of material usually is a little less bright than a multi-wrap film.

For single or double wrap, I recommend Corbin's film if you want the cored look. It provides an emitter flare, gradually dims toward the tip and has a coring effect.

If you want even light with emitter flare and a multi wrap. Then go with Ultra's blades. Not so much of a core but they are really bright.

Most Luxeon sabers throw a lot of light outward in a completely dark room. It's just the nature of the beast, but it can be controlled to a point depending on yor diffusion method.

The thing is, it's impossible for a saber to simultaneously "look" bright and not illuminate a room. The light that is shining on the walls and other surroundings is the same light that's shining on your eyes. If the blade were not allowing any light to escape, you wouldn't be able to see any glow from it at all!

Also, it's not true that a lightsaber blade does not illuminate what's around it. For proof, check out the duel in the dark between Anakin and Dooku, or Luke's vision in the evil cave on Dagobah.

I think you'll find that if you really pay attention (especially to the prequel films when they had better techniques for putting reflected light on things even though no actual lit saber was used in filming) the sabers usually do cast light around.

And anyway, what I said still applies. You can't have something that glows brightly yet doesn't cast light on your surroundings...those two ideas are mutually exclusive. If it weren't casting light around the room, it wouldn't appear bright.

The only saber lighting method I've seen that won't light up a room is EL.

that's because it's so dim, there isn't enough light to spill around  ;)

Well think about it like this Alies at least when your dueling in the woods and its dark you'll see the trees and stuff so you know where not to go...lol

Anyway I'm going to have to agree with the others any Light source bright enough to be seen clearly in broad day light will have to give off some forme of luminance to its surroundings Simple physics.

Besides think of it as mood lighting with the tranquil sound of the lightsaber hum to focus your thoughts to a single clarity...lol

I believe he expects a high candela rating and a low lumen rating. This would indeed be the "perfect" saber, as movie sabers don't throw a lot of light around the room (although they do a bit more in the prequel trilogy). However, a blade such as this is going to be very difficult to attain, and I offer no solution as to how to get one.
