Title: Question on re-securing crystal illumination LED in the chassis
Post by: Setsuna Stratos on December 01, 2018, 09:46:13 PM
I've finally started to assemble my Crystal Core Chassis after several years and have the LED crystal plate assembled but found that the thin VHB tape did not keep the LED permanently in place. It is now moving around and I have to remove the focusing crystal to access the LED and re-secure it somehow. Wondered if others have had the same issue and what you might have used to secure the LED? I wasn't sure if it needed to transfer heat through the plate or if it was too small to matter. So depending on that I wondered what adhesive or tape was best to use.

Hello there Setsuna Stratos

Good to see you back around again   sorry I din't get back to you sooner but I was looking
through the archives of when you bought your chassis so knew which version you have.
I believe I found your order in 2011

Okay so on to getting your LED re-secured...

You said your chamber is built so, you should be able to unscrew the 4 aluminum posts on top of the
power gates along the sides and be able to lift your top crystal and power gates out and one unit.

This will allow access to the bottom plate so you can unscrew it and get back in to the LED under
the bottom crystal.

If the LED is not sticking to the single layer of thin DS tape you can add another layer or two
to provide some cushion for the LED to sink into and grip better.

Alternatively you can use the thicker DS tape but you will need to test fit to make sure the face
of the LED isn't touching the bottom of the crystal so you'll want to maintain a small gap.

I would also recommend adding some DS tape under the wire leads in the channel on the mounting disk
that they run through to help keep them in place as they do get tugged on a bit when routing them
up through the power gates and on to the board mounting area.

Please let me know if that helps and Good luck with the rest of your build  :azn:

Thank you Yoda! I figured I might have to add some extra layers of tape, just wanted to verify it wouldn't have a negative affect on the LED. Luckily I have only got the plate done so I don't have to disassemble much to correct the problem.

You are very welcome and it sounds like if your just on the bottom chamber plate then yeah your good

One thing that occurred to me... since this kit is from 2011 if it remained bagged up the tape should
still be okay BUT if you feel it isn't as sticky as it once was then let me know and I can cut some
strips of thick and thin tape and drop them in the mail to you as I believe you are in the USA.

Alternatively I can tell you what tape can suffice you may be able to get locally but no need to
buy a roll of tape if all you need are a few strips that I can cut and send to you

Either way do let me know how you get along with it :azn:

I did have the parts still in the bags and just started assembling the kit about a week ago. The tape is still more than sticky enough, I just separated the plate and re-secured the LED with a second small piece of the thin tape under the LED and it's holding very solid. I should be good to continue with the assembly now. Thanks again Yoda!
