Title: Stuck coupler on Awesomesauce X11000
Post by: Lord Xeno on November 09, 2016, 10:34:54 AM
Has anyone dealt with a stuck coupler on an Awesomesauce or other high end aluminum hilt?  The coupler is stuck on just one hilt. The hilt has sat for awhile untouched and the coupler has been on for years.  In fact it was never removed after I received it, so dirt is unlickey to be the cause.  I am thinking the time and possible temperature changes.  I have read in other threads that WD40, heat, tapping it, strap wrenches would work.  I just want to confirm that these are all viable options without damaging the hilt threads or the finish.  Thanks for your help!

Just like any other stuck threads, I prefer WD-40 as the most unobtrusive way. It sometimes takes more (like strap wrenches), but the old WD tends to work wonders.

To make the hilts line up, it is sometimes necessary to use a strap wrench to tighten parts.  It could be possible that this was the case with yours.  I would put on a thin coating of penetrating oil, and let it sit for a day or two.  Clean the outside real well and use a couple strap wrenches to loosen it.  If it has never been apart and the threads are not damaged, this should get the parts loose.  Otherwise, shoot me an email and I will look into what can be done.

As above, also I have  found that wrapping the 2 sections in masking tape helps to grip the parts by hand, most of the time I don't need the strap wrenches after using tape.

You could also try putting it in the fridge/freezer for 10-20min. Sometimes it's enough for the metal threads to contract and allow them to release. It's worked for me once before, so it's worth a shot.

WD40 was applied and left to penetrate the threads for about 2 days.  Still couldn't separate the coupler with masking tape applied.  However, a strap wrench worked to open it up.  All good now, thanks guys!
