OK I started on the grenade.  I am not finished with it yet but am getting there.  The ROTS has wide grooves at the bottom and thinner outer raised sections.  I got it pretty close already but again its not finished.  Once I do the side cuts I may have to come in and redo the grooves depending on how good I cut them.

Here is a pic for now.  I have to stop on it for a couple of days because I have to take care of some other stuff but will probably pick back up on Saturday.

Well I just couldnt do it...I couldnt quit on it yet.  I had to see if I could make the cuts so I tried.

I think it came out GREAT and am really happy with it so far.

Here are pics...as you can see the side cut got into the grooves just a hair so I will need to clean it up just a little before I PC it.

well I got bad news that turned into good news (just more work for me).  I was almost finished with the grenade section.  I had ti turned down, opened up for the chamber, drilled and tapped for the neck etc.  All I had to do was part it (I left it long so I could work with it on the machine) and cut grooves in it for the locking since I am going to twist lock it instead of thread it.  Well I guess I went a little too fast and the parting tool dug in and before I could back the tool out it had twisted and broke the grenade at the base.  I was pretty upset because of all the work I put into it but decided that it gave me the chance to improve on what I had done (I always try to look at the positive of every situation).

Tonight I started over and made a new one but this time it came out better.  The raised cogs of the other one were a little bit too thin and they were at 60 degrees.  This time I made the cogs thicker but was able to get the thicker groove in the bottom by changing the angle of them and getting them closer to the correct angle (they are not 60 degrees on the prop).

So right now I am at the same point I was when i took pics last time.  The grooves are cut and the end hole is drilled and tapped.  Tomorrow I will bore it out to the correct size and will not be parting it but just facing it over and over until I get it to the length I need LOL.  That was the first time I have had a problem with my parting tool on this machine...oh well it worked out better in the end (if I do not mess this one up).

Tomorrow I will post pics of the broken grenade and of the new improved one.

I've done that. I HATE parting on the lathe.

But like you said the second time is usually better.

Can't wait to see it.

Ugh! I hate that feeling when you know you've just ruined a piece and have lost all the time invested.
Thankfully you were able to see it as an opportunity rather than a defeat.

FWIW: I have ruining (or nearly ruined) a many of pieces during the parting step. It is one of the most stressful steps for me so I have come to avoid it whenever possible. Perhaps I just need to upgrade to a bigger better lathe :)

Thanks for sharing this "setback". Build logs are my favorite and it is nice to hear both the ups and downs of the journey.

I was under the impression that a big lathe with large cross slide and rigid compound would be better.

Denzil what size is yours?

My 9x19 is leaving tomorrow. Ordering a new lathe today actually. Going 10x22 as that's the max I can fit. Probably can't even get it onto my bench either. But it'll cut nicely.

MH, I'm surprised as I assumed the big machines would cut like butter. Just too fast?

I've made the mistake of not having the tool straight. Or my compound gibs loose.
