Title: Luke ROTJ Version 2 (as first built) completed!
Post by: robiwan on July 25, 2006, 01:33:36 PM
Well, almost. I'm still waiting on my cone knob. But as you can see in the pics it looks great. The mods are as follows. The neck and bottom portion of the hilt were painted black, d-ring from Luke ESB added, Graflex clamp from Luke ESB added, the on/off switch is now poking out the side on the clamp. Again I'm still waiting on the cone knob. I got one from a Dewback member. I also have to add the emmitter tube detail as well. I just couldn't wait to get pics up. So what do you guys and gals think?

Very nice Robiwon!  Can you get a pic of the on/off switch.  I'm interested in how that looks.

You can see the switch in the second pic. It is in the right side hole on the side of the clamp. In the third pic you can see the switch sticking out on the left.

I don't know why but I like the clean look of a "as first built" V2. I don't like the scuffed and scratched V2. Keep an eye in the for sale section though. I just may sell this to fund the new Obi when it comes out.

Yes it is the ROTJ switch. Basicaly the band portion of the clamp is sitting over the hole where the old activation box was. The switch is rubber cemented into the battery guide sleeve. The hole in the clamp was enlarged slightly for the switch to fit thru. You have to realy press you thumb over the switch to turn it on and off as not much of it sticks thru.
Edit - Sorry for the double post.  :-[

VERY nice.  I've always preferred the V2 to the Hero.

This is such an easy conversion that MR should do it as well. The Luke ESB Graflex clamp fit the ROTJ hilt like a glove. I had to sand off the tabs that are bent to the inside that help hold the clamp to the ESB hilt. Other than that it fits great.

Post by: Snoballz on July 25, 2006, 03:15:53 PM
I'd be all over this conversion, but I can't see myself tearing up my ESB for it.  If I could find a broken ESB for really cheap, I'd definately do this.

I was lucky as I had a broken one already.

are you gonna scrape it up like the movie hilt? or leave it the clean black & silver?
Title: Re: Luke ROTJ Version 2 (as first built) completed!
Post by: robiwan on July 26, 2006, 04:09:43 PM
I don't think I'll scrape it up. I like the "clean" look I think. Mods still to be done to it are the cone knob (should be here next week), stainless tube for the emitter, and I should have my machined acrylic pointed tips back from the machinest next week as well. I'll add more pics when those mods are done.

I think that would be best

Thanks. It would be cool to have access to more of these cones. I would then do a weathered V2!  ;)

I understand what you mean but I think it's all in how you hold the saber.  I keep my hands pretty high so it doesn't effect me much.
Title: Re: Luke ROTJ Version 2 (as first built) completed!
Post by: robiwan on August 30, 2006, 06:33:17 PM
Where you grip the saber, even with two hands you don't realy touch the cone. Your hand falls just above the cone, it's like a resting place for your hand so it does not slip down.

Mortgage, kids, credit card bills... take your pick.  I wish that I could keep all of my collectibles, but in reality you have to make decisions on what is important and where you can spend money.  I feel I’ve picked the right priority.   :)

Hello there! The cone came with a threaded insert in the bottom. I drilled and taped a hole in the hilt to match. I then JB Welded the threaded rod into the cone. It now just screws into the hilt. Are you planning on doing a V2?

I'll be using my cone knob as a recharge port Kill key on my V2 that I am building with a CF V2.61 and Lux V Green.

Thanks for the compliment. I used regular Testors Flat Black spray paint for models. You can find it at any hobby shop or store like Walmart.

Is there different sized graflex clamps or something cuase I looked at my brothers graflex clamp that he got from somewhere and It dosent look like it will fit on the luke hilt.

I thought people had to use the MRFX clamp thingy to make a v2?

You need a clamp from a MR Luke ESB saber.

Thanks Boxster. I wasn't the first to build a V2 and wont be the last. Darth Tyranus is building one as we speak that will trump mine pretty good. Make sure you check out his thread as well.

Yeah, having seen his! Man, the colour combo's really nice! Kinda reminded me of a Stingray in full black and chrome trimmings/bumpers. There seems like a mystery that surrounds the hilts that both of you are building. This is one exciting project and I am going to look closely into it!!!
