Title: The Dara, a NEW saber for Ramaditya, complete, 5/31/09

This is a VERY long winded topic, ..sorry, but a lot needs to be said. ;D ;D

This is  saber build log for Ramaditya's Latest saber, the Dara.

He approached me several months ago for a new build, ...one with many features. I knew that this project would most likely benefit from a slew of other talented saber smiths and machinists.

So I began contacting a few forum members:

FenderBender and Allaera Secura:
Ramaditya requested a crystal chamber in his hilt, ......hmmmmmm this seemed like an obvious choice  ;) . I contacted Allaerra, discussed a few options and about 2-3 weeks, a really cool MHS Based crystal Chamber arrived at my door. What more could a person as for!

Master Jedye:
MJ and I hadn't Officially formed Gemini Concepts at the start of this build, ...but he was the obvious choice to make a shroud. His dremel-fu is Sttttrrrroooooooonnnnggg.

Ramaditya didn't have a design, ......he had a "vision" of what the saber should represent for him, ......so I talked it over with MJ and several days later, he submitted a render. From there, ....it was Dremel Time.
He really let is artistic side flow on this one, .....I like it a lot! Kudos Bro!
He even Powder coated it with a clear coat to ensure it will not tarnish.  Awesome job on this!

Makototsai:
Mako's 2n1 soundboard drives this whole thing, ....and he is a remarkable person! I sent him a PM, ....told him what I needed and he shipped this out as soon as he finished making it. Shipping time was oddly only a few days from Taiwan.  :o :o :o
Now, I couldn't use the speaker that came with it, and I have placed a smaller speaker in there, ....but I have bought a NEW/BETTER speaker for this, ....and will situate it  further in the hilt. The idle hum on this board is AMAZING!! But I find the clashes a little high pitched for my taste, (but I think it is because of the speaker I used and it's location in the hilt) I will fix this, ...remember, ...Work in PROGRESS!
The video at the end Exaggerates the High Pitched sounds, ...It DOES sounds MUCH better in person.

I also need to change the battery pack, ...I will use an 18650 trustfire setup for this, ....I just need to MAKE the battery holder.





Great people to work with, ...all of you. This has been a cool experience so far!

And why was this saber built like this, ...with so many people involved, you ask?

At the time of the first discussion of this saber, ......this community was shaken by events that will not be discussed, we all know what they were/are.  The air was thick, ...tension was high.

Then out of nowhere, Ramaditya Pm'ed me, ....he wanted a saber for him AND his girlfriend to share. He had no render, ...no design, ....he just knew he wanted a purple crystal and white blade, ....and it should be named the Dara.

Dara, ....means several things, ..... "Young Love", ..."First Love".
Cool huh, ......I thought so.

With tension mounting and events uncertain in the saber community, ....I, ....we, ......us, ....the builders of THIS really cool saber, just wanted to show people that we, the sabersmiths, have a mutual respect and admiration for each others work, ....for each others talents. We discuss builds behind the scenes, ....we help each other when needed, ...when asked. We SUPPORT each others decisions and share our ideas. We can argue, we can disagree, but we do it respectfully.
We are a community, ....we are friends, .....we are family!

All is well, ....all will continue to be well.

So what is left? This IS a Work in Progress:

Polish the hilt, ....it's gonna be SHINY and scratch free!
Make a battery holder for that 18650 trust fire, .......accepting ideas on that, ..PM me please!
Add a covertec knob/wheel
Add a recharge port for that trustfire and Kill key
POSSIBLY add an accent LED on the pommel
Replace the speaker so that the true awesomeness of the Mako board can be heard!
wait on the pommel, (The pommel in the picture is only a "placeholder".  ;D ;D
Wait on the Portholes
Prolly a few other things, .....but I'll figure it out!

Guys I might say that is one bad saber. It looks like Ramaditya will have the coolest saber in Indonesia. Congrats to everyone involved on the nice looking hilt and to Ram for the great saber.

Wow, to see this finally happen! I heard some whispers and twitters once upon a time, when I was naive and scared that the saber community woud disappear like a double filet o-fish (sorry, I'm hungry).

This is beautiful!  I sincerely hope this isn't the last true collaboration that we'll see!

True, that this will be one of the greatest sabers ever made, and I am proud to be the owner!

This will also be my identity, as a Jedi must have his/her own custom saber, and Dara will be one.

Please give all attention to this WIP, and I will do it, too!

I requested earlier to add an accent LED at the pommel, perhaps it will be nice. But DC told me that the board probably would not have enough power to drive it.

1. Won't it be too much light if we add accent LED to accompany the crystal chamber which has already lit the hilt?
2. Suppose this accent LED idea is accepted, do you think the board can handle it?

I think the board can handle it, .....just gotta wire a few things up a little differently. Since it is a 7 pin style board, I have a few ideas.
My concerns are still power, since it is only 4.5V max.  We got quite a bit going on in that hilt, (or will once it is all complete)

So, yes, ...we will still try it, I THINK it will be fine.


And sorry, ...but I dont understand the first question. The crystal chamber is very bright, ....it is just that my cheap camera doesn't show it well while the BRIGHT p4 is lit up. But the Chamber is a bright, vivid purple.

Wow a very cool saber. Im jealose to be honest the crystal chamber is prettty much what i envisoned for my dual saber that i have contacted ldm on mine.
Diffrent color but just wow on that.
The gold overlay is fantastic awesome work.
I wasnt around for whatever drama that happen before but i dont see fx boards or sabersmiths putting down this hobby.  it might to alot seem like childs play but to me it fullfills dreams i had has a small boy and i am sure wheever one of the sabersmiths finishes a build he or she knows what it means to the owner and how appreciative we are to them.
Btw qui qon eagerley awaiting the brass saber 15 mmm i cant wait to have it in my hands.

To both Maim and Sparhawk, yes this one is actually a great hobby. Never mind about child's play, as it can remove stress and bring happiness like any other hobbies, so what?

Back to Dara. I started the request last December 2008, and slowly built this together with DC.

Now awaiting pommel and some minor improvements, and the saber will be ready! And, it's duelable, too!

This is one of those sabers that crop up from time to time and seems to get the perfect balance between elegant design and uncluttered, effective simplicity... Ramaditya, you're in for a treat - aside from looking good, I'm sure it'll also be a joy to handle, and the sounds of the 2in1 card are great from the YouTube videos I've seen.  ;)

Respect to all involved - it's great to see people pooling their time and talent to create something so fricking awesome  8) I look forward to seeing the finished saber with pommel, etc (looks great as it is anyway, mind you...).

Fenderbender and I are honored to have been a part of this project.   A few months ago, Darth Call approached us about making a crystal chamber for a saber.  A wonderful saber being made for a wonderful couple.  He had a concept to get some of the sabersmiths in the community to each contribute a part of this saber.  To show everyone that we, the sabersmiths, are a united group who can work together even when there are forces trying to cause dissension, and distrust.  At the time when this project first started, evil darkside forces were conspiring to try to put "us little guys", the individual sabersmiths who create sabers for the community to enjoy, out of business.  Darth Call had an idea that by collaborating on this project, we could "bring balance" back to the lightsaber community.  We could all get together and create something good and wipe out all the negativity with a united front.  It was an inspiring idea and I believe that it did help to pave the way towards some necessary healing.  A lot of people out there don't realize that, as Darth Call mentioned, we have a community within the community, as it were.  We share ideas and discuss new things in order to better sabersmithing and continue to bring the development of custom lightsabers forward, improving them with new features and techniques.  This is a tremendous benefit to the entire community and one which we cannot allow evil darkside forces to disrupt. 

It is great to see the progress that has been made so far on this lightsaber, and will be terrific to see it when it is completed.  The new owners will not only have an awesome saber, but one that represents the heart of the sabersmithing community, as well as the spirit of the community as a whole.  This is truly a unique piece!

When I received my first custom saber, Valkyria, my girlfriend approached me and she said it was beautiful and she wanted to have one. But at the same time, my heart wanted to have it, too. So we spoke and decided to ask Darth Call to build another saber, not only for me, but for her as well. A saber that can be for both of us, as my saber is hers and her saber is mine, too.

And, I heard that evil dark force event was floating around here, and Darth Call came up with the idea. So I agreed, and it means the saber won't only unite both my girlfriend and I, but also this community as well!

Well, I think my time has not arrived to say thanks to all of you yet, as the saber is still in progress. But here's what I want to say...

Dara will always be mine forever! I am terribly sorry if one of you probably want to have this piece someday, or those evil dark force that will probably plan to destroy it, as this saber will never appear on eBay or any other shop, as THE VALUE OF THIS LIGHTSABER CANNOT BE MEASURED, as it contains our spirits, the saber community!

Guys, if my destiny brings me to marry my girlfriend, I will proudly take that beautiful moment to show that the saber will be with us in the procession day...

So, please put any effort or suggestion in this WIP. I can't do anything from here, guys, but to pray for our community and the successful making of this lightsaber...

Changing the oil and checking all fluids, .....The left tire needs replacing too.   :o :o  ;D

Seriously though, ...no new updates other than still looking at the wiring for and additional Accent LED and recharge port hole placement.

Will have updated picture this week. ;)


EDIT: Answering questions below:

It will be a "sealed hilt"  NO reason to open it up to recharge the battery. Wiring management system will be used To keep the insides tidy and organized.

It's quite a longrun, but I think I have to be cool for this.

Nice minor update, and I am waiting for the pics!

PS: Is it possible to make the wiring tidier, so I don't need to deal with cables everywhere?

Why would you have to deal with cables everywhere?  You really have no reason to be taking this saber apart....Gemini Concepts stand behind their work 100% and on the remote chance something goes wrong,  they will fix it.  All you need to be concerned about is changing the batteries,  and for that there aren't going to be "cables everywhere."

Update, 05/31/09

Ramaditya requested an accent LED in the pommel, while I was there, I wanted to see about drilling a few more sound holes around the pommel and allowing for a little light to pass through from the accent LED.

The trustfire 18650 works like a charm, no battery holder. The battery is permanently inside the hilt, wired directly to the recharge port. The hilt is not meant to open, nothing to do in there as the battery can only be charged through the port.
I'm not sure how long this saber runs before the batteries need to be charged, ....but I can you, ....it appears to be well over an hour!

The recharge port is at the bottom, in the mps insert of the pommel, nice and out of the way.
The white poly-c blade is 34" long, the new retention screw has a nice brass knurled knob on it.
The saber looks goods, sounds good and feels awesome.

I'll be including a custom kill key with this to save the batteries from draining when not in use.

I say this is complete, ....but I need to place the covertec knob on it, ...I just wasn't sure that Ramaditya even wanted one, ...so Im waiting on him to verify this.

Ramaditya, this will ship out Tuesday via USPS, I know it takes a while to get there, so u may want to get your charger ready for when it arrives.

2.1mm adapter for a smart charger, which is what I believe u have.
