Title: Plo Koon hilt run
Post by: JQsabers on May 21, 2014, 03:30:23 PM
Hi everyone, we finally have the plans together for our Clan saber run.
The initial production run is for 20 hilts, three versions, 10 x  Plo Koon, 5 x  Mace and 5 x Luminara.
Some of the Plo have already been booked.
If the demand exceeds this 20 then we may consider increasing the numbers.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1248.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh485%2Fjqsabers%2FPloKoonAssembly_zps8816cdb5.jpg&hash=73a656240162a7f2f1fe5c24d96e0ae6e76608ba)

So, what's on offer, the hilts will be 29cm long with a main body diameter of 37mm.
I have used these pics as a guide to the finish we want to achieve,
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1248.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh485%2Fjqsabers%2Ftiin-aotc1_zps6dd1d5dc.jpg&hash=e34f0dd769c7d83059857778482bb7d47c062ad0)(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1248.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh485%2Fjqsabers%2Funduli-aotc1_zpsc9166c17.jpg&hash=f7d05227529b0aa65120a6ca478c33c3940389d6)

The finish will be micro blasted  then anodised silver, this will make for a tidy scratch resistant finish.
The gold parts for the Luminara will be anodised.
The Mace will be the same as the Plo but no blue anodising on the emitter.
Switches will be two 6mm tact switches in FR switch rings with switch hats and a 2mm pin to go through 2 x 2mm holes spaced in the rectangle cartouche.
A recharge socket will be under the red thumbscrew with enough room for a small kill key.
We decided on a 7/8 blade.
The hilt kits will come with the following;
Heatsink
Switches
switch rings
switch hats
Led bezels
speaker holder
Recharge socket and kill key
Saber plug

Prices, Plo and Luminara  £340GBP  Mace £325GBP
Payments plus PP fees.

This posting is to gather initial interest so no monies need be paid :D

Please PM me or email Susan at the JQ site if you want on the list.

Is there any possibility of having some made without switch holes?

Great, names duly noted :)
Re the switches, I am not 100% set on these as is, thought they would be best for use and install, saying that we could make the red thumbscrew and 5mm led as switches then move the recharge socket to the pommel.
Which would be best???

I would prefer the red thumb screw option with led aux.

Nice! The heatsink looks familiar to me...?!

These sabers are designed from the actual character saber concepts / in film used props (as far as I'm aware)

These are a sort of Clan Saber that all have some general similarities, and then some basic unique features to set them apart from each other :)

no in fact I was really speaking of the heatsink itself as it looks made for quadpod pcb (using XPE2) it have holes in the center, and JQSabers are the ones I asked to make me some for my Organophaos sabers

My apologies for the mis-interpretation there lol

I thought he was talking about the emitter end... The slotted grooves going around the emitter to be precise (it is sometimes referred to as the heat sink as the idea is that the heat of the blade itself is dissipated through the area in the emitter to stop overheating and eventual melting)

I think we got there in the end with what was meant originally though LOL

I like the idea of the led accent being a switch. those are fairly easy to do especially since I have done them on all my oR sabers.  they are nice to do

Just a standard internal thread heatsink there, holes for Tri leds on the final version.
Sounds good for the switches then, I will get the plans altered for the red thumbscrew.
We can now think about the recharge socket going in the pommel, will have a word with the FR guys about a speaker holder combo, this would work as the end op the pommel will unscrew.
I am also having a few doubts about the detailing next to the led, for the Plo I have it as a 3mm led in bezel, the Luminara looks like two.
Anyone got more info on these???

From what I know, the picture of the prop in the first post was a fan made prop by a member of yourprops.com. I've looked closely and it doesn't look like they are actually LEDs? They look like small grub screws? Maybe it's just my eyes? But I don't think they are LEDs. :))

you're welcome, I'm sorry for my bad engRish, my bad!

for records JQSabers saved my Organophaos finishing with the specific led heatsink I needed (my sabers use quadpod xpe2 led).
Anyway this saber looks very good! Bump!!

Thanks all for the response and feedback, especially Alex, Top Man :D
Final adjustments to the plans include slightly wider pommel vanes and a red thumbscrew switch assembly, FR guys are working on a speaker holder/recharge socket and we have a mod for the pommel so it now has a removable end cap which will make access to the socket nice and easy.
Preliminary quantity of 30 hilts which will leave a few spare :D
Will post progress as it happens.

Hi Daren, thanks for the reply to my PM. Is there any projected time frame as of yet, or is it still too early to determine? Also, will you be asking for full payment, 50.% deposits, etc?

Thank you.

Good news is all the plans are here and in order.
The main engineer has the drawings and is buying the metal stock, the thumbscrews and pommel vane plans are ready to order, Russrep is doing those for us :D
Just got to double check our list and make sure we have a few spare.
I am allowing 4 weeks for the main metal work but that's not counting engineers weeks but I will be on his case so it doesn't drag on.

Hmm, the engineer will be cutting the emitters very soon and I am in two minds over the 7/8 or 1" blade.
I am thinking 1" would be better all round with more blade options and easier for customers to use their own blades.

Any comments?

I think 1" would be best. You can adapt a 7/8" blade to a 1" hole, but not the other way around. 1" would be more versatile, and I am all about versatility.

Okay, I think we should have the at 7/8 from the engineer and I can make these 1" as per customer requirements.

Talking 7/8 blades, just got a box of clear 7/8 tubes which I am building with clear bullet tips and having them media blasted, these will be available with the Plo hilts.
More soon on this.

I've always thought 7/8 looks better, 1" just looks a little too big.

Definitely prefer 1".  While 7/8" can be a good compromise for certain hilts, 1" is fuller and more duelable.  The Plo and Luminara, to me, do not seem to be hilts that really "require" a 7/8".  JMHO.

Up-date;
Ah, not much to say at the moment, we had a small set back with the pommel vanes, something went wrong for the engineer cutting them and they came in the wrong thickness :(
They are now being redone.
Our main engineer hasn't started cutting yet despite his assurance, heat is now being applied.

My bench is vey nearly clear so I will be on these fulltime as soon as the parts are ready.

Re the blade size question, all the emitters will come to me as 7/8, I can then bore out to 1" for those want this :))
More soon.

Up-date;
Progress stalled a bit with us having Euro Flu but back on the case now.
I have the switch caps, holders, thumbscrews and Covertec wheels all done.
The engineer has all the metal stock for cutting.
One issue that has arisen is our pommel design, I wasn't happy with the proportions so we are redesigning that now and will include the polished plate for the end cap.
This is being sorted now and I expect to set the engineer cutting next week.

Up-date, finally got the pommel redesigned :)
We now have a removable end cap with an additional polished end plate, this assembly will be un-screwed to access a kill key.

Next job is to cut the holes and counter bores, I chose to do this myself as we added an extra part for the engineer to make.
New cutters and a steady hand required :)

I still have to decide on the finish, had a test part done in high silver, think it will work for the Luminara, for the Plo and Mace a darker shade is needed.
I will test a few parts to be sure.

One down, 39 to go :D

The red thumb cap isn't the correct one, that will have a knurl.
When all the hilts have been prepared they will get a bead blasting before anodising.
For the Luminara a bright silver really looks good, this is shown in the pic.
For the Plo and Mace it will be a flat silver finish, I will test a part before confirming.
Also, the lower emitter flanges have been left until anodising, they will get a trim back to bare metal later.

Force Relics are working on the speaker holder/recharge socket, plan is to use the small 2.3mm socket.

Oh, worth a mention, I will be doing a few "Special", some Sith versions in black and red plus a few with other colour anodising ;D

More soon.

Yes, we have some left:-)
State of play today is I just had back some test parts from the anodisers and we have established the shade of silver for the main Plo body, so that's the finishes sorted.
I need to set a side a good 10 days now to cut and prepare all the parts, the we can finally get these ready.
More soon.

Hi, well, I am a bit frustrated , all the parts are here to finish before anodising it's just getting a full week to do them.
Our Factory build has snatched my time away from this.
My apologies to all, will pull all my fingers out of everything on these very soon.

From the JQS website - an update on 4th Jan.

Plo Koon – we would like to apologise to all our clients who have Plo Koon ordered. The run has been delayed by various issues but we are looking to get them ready for sale, kits first, by the Spring.

I'm happy to wait as long as it takes to get them right

Hi @JQsabers - What's the order/availability status of this run? I'd love one of either of these! It's a great design!...

...While I have your ear, what's the chance of getting the gorgeous golden pommel with the blue emitter?... ;)

I recently received a Luminara from JQSabers and was not at all disappointed!  Definitely a fan of Daren's work!  I asked for some slight weathering and it turned out awesome.  Great finish and wonderful rumble motor, loud bass speaker, with custom blade plug.  Fully loaded CF8.  A beautiful piece for sure!!!

I'll post some pics soon.

Looking forward to pics . Hopefully that means the original Plo Koon run is still on (I haven't heard any updates since those on this thread), or maybe your Lumi was based on a different build?

That looks absolutely awesome - congratulations on that score :)

Out of curiosity where is recharge port / kill key?
Title: Re: Plo Koon hilt run
Post by: dr.djcolegrove on January 29, 2017, 10:15:46 PM
The end cap/pommel unscrews and the recharge port is set under there.  So it doesn't have an ugly recharge port staring you in the face when the kill key is removed.  Definitely good planning.
