do knives count

yeah why not?

Back in '84, my father bought me a 13" survival knife. And not the cheap Rambo look-a-like. This was a 440 SS, razor-sharp real-deal. I don't what was bigger, the smile on Pa's face when I held it, or the fear in Ma's eyes when she saw it. Hehehehe.......That knife and I have memories. I still have it today. And, for a Stainless Steel blade, it is still razor sharp. As for your question, Lord Knuckle, Stainless Steel is usually not the best for retaining an edge on a blade as the nickel composition in SS may rust proof-it, but being a softer metal, it does not retain it's edge. (the metal nicks easier due to the softness) ;)

 ;D

I thought the hard metals flaked because they were brittle, and you wanted a softer steel so it won't shatter, can't remember where I heard that

Stainless steel shouldn't be used for cutting because it is very brittle.  With a stainless steel sword you run the risk of this happening:

or if that link doesn't work:

And here is a good article to read:  http://swordforum.com/sfu/primer/thebest.html

Stainless steel is a very, very poor choice of steel when it comes to making swords. Because of its hardness, it doesn't have the flexibility of proper carbon- heat-treated steel, which is what good swords are made of. The moment it will bend, it will remain bent and not spring back to true. A good sword can easily bend to 30-40 degrees off of true and come back. Stainless never will. And because of it's hardness, the moment it hits something it doesn't like, it has very high chances of breaking or even shattering instead of just nicking.

Those are awesome.  I've been tempted to get a Duncan sword for many years now as I loved that TV show.

I have to agree.  The Highlander TV series was great and quite instrumental in me aquiring the skills that I have now.  I learned how to saber spin by watching that show.

I used to own some Last Legend Katanas/wakizashis, a Tsunami katana/wak combo,  a Yashima,  but have recently sold them.

I still have these for sale:

(I know, not a FS thread, but I do own these)
It's the Last Legend ProSword  908IS set,  Sandwich construction with the inner layer made of T10 high carbon steel, and the outer layers made of SI65 steel.
It's got the katana, wakizashi and a case with cleaning kit.

I have not cut anything with it, all I did when I got them was take them out, wipe the blades down with some choji and rice paper, and take pics.  but my experience with Last Legend stuff is that they are quality swords.  They cut nice, and are weighted just right.

Kat - 28 inch blade with Bo Hi, Wak - 19 inch blade w/ BoHi

11 inch handle, black cotton over white samé, Wak 9 inch handle

for more info, go here:
http://whiteheronblades.com/prosword.htm

It's the 908IS set, about halfway down. i'm asking $400 shipped in US

---
When buying swords for anything other than display, make sure they have a full tang.
Basically, most of the 420 and 440 Stainless Steel swords are meant for display and usually have
a short tang, or a bolt tang.  If getting a real sword to do stuff, like tameshigir, buy a quality sword.

The Paul Chen practical Katana is a good starter katana.

When was the tv show? I liked the first movie but was quite perplexed by the second. I hope the show was good

Master Skywalker **Bows** where did you get the highlander katana?

I got the Duncan from a now closed sword/knife shop here locally back in 92.

The Christopher Lambert signature edition I got from the Highlander catalog a few years back.  Only 500 of them made.

The series started in 1992 and ran till 1998.  It then spawned another Highlander movie and one spin-off series.

You can get the season sets on ebay for $20-30 and they are well worth that and more.  Awesome sword fights in EVERY 1 hour episode.
