Darth Malgus Lightsaber project
« on: August 08, 2012, 05:56:06 AM »
Hey guys, i want to show you my progress on the Darth Malgus Saber i'm building. First of all these are the planned specs:

PC 2.0
7.4v (2X 18650's)
Recharge and Rice ports
LEDengin 10 W Deep red or standard red (Full powah setup, no FoC)
Premiun TCSS speaker

So i started the saber by getting the Ultrasabers Malice emitter(larger claws) and round pommel:

I used a 5 inch extension for show only... but then i figured that the claws were too large and the pommel was not that close to the original one.

So i got the small claws emitter PAUSE:[ i could have gotten just the claws but i liked the look and feel of the larger claws that i decided to keep them. ] and the square pommel, plus i decided to go with the bronze button so i could paint it later, the red one is plastic looking.

Also i got a choke and a main body for it with some adapters. After some paint this is how it looks:

And here is a side by side with the TOR game lightsaber:

Si i still have a lot of work to do, i will be machining a safety plug that resembles the tip of the emitter shown on the picture above, that is why i painted the malice emitter all black to the end. When the blade inserted this plug will be removed and will be left looking like the  saber on the right. I think its a good trade-of.

Next is to continue wiring the board and the switches and ports... while i wait for the custom plug.

and in case you were wondering what happened to the larger claws and extra sections i had, this is what i did:

Its going to be like a close combat weapon with a shorter blade... its a beast already without the blade LOL.

Thanks.

Nice work :).  I am curious though, where did you get the photo of the "ingame" saber?  I have several screenshots which are very different from that.  That looks like someone's render.  Just curious as this is a saber I am interested in doing as well :D.

The pic was posted by Flagwaver on the RPF, i'm not sure is his or not, but i have made a lot of screen captures of the trailers and looks like this one.  I sent him a pm requesting more info and permission if needed. It's based of the game's trailers mostly.

here is an image from star wars wikia its the back side but you can tell its the same saber

Ah, OK, by your first post I was taking it to mean that the saber in the picture was the ingame saber.  You said "here it is with the TOR Saber" :).  That is someone else's interpretation, which is what I suspected.  I am always looking for more official Bioware artwork of that saber :).

Your saber is coming along nicely!  Congrats on the build :).

Absolutely, this is not the official Bioware saber, you are correct. I've seen at least 4 different (yet similar) versions of it, and this is the one  i liked the most.  :)

I do not have the game since it's not yet available in my country (Mexico) but if you can share a few ingame screens of the lightsaber i would appreciate it.

Thanks for the cheers and will post more pics and videos when i finish the electronics.

Here's some I pulled from Deceived.

I'm working along the same lines.
Same choke.
Will you be adding in a black leather wrap for the grip? I saw this render and it looks more comfortable to me.

Fun fact: That photo of the "in game saber" is from the production artwork we got from Blur studios when they were making assets for the CG trailers.

So it's somewhat official, but not seen in game.

(I have the same set of artwork for my Satele saber, among other things)

Sloth, that pommel looks oversized to me compared to the shots in the Deceived trailer.  Any thoughts?

I have a stack of pre production renders of the assets used in the trailers.  That shot came from one of those.  Now, if that pommel was reduced as an edit, i wouldn't be able to say.  The Satele saber was pretty much  unchanged from those renders to the trailer, so I assumed it wasn't changed for the Malgus, but I could be wrong.  There's no way of telling an artist might have edited the model before the final render, or even varied it between shots.

Edit:

Removed...

Edit edit:

I don't mean to derail your thread, great project, I just wanted to clarify the origin of that bit of artwork.

Edit edit edit:  Removed pic, as I probably shouldn't be posting it anyway.

Thanks for the clarification Slothfurnace it's great to know where this came from...  :)

EDIT: here is what Flagwaver responded:

"The render comes directly from Blue studio. That is the full-light render of the actual saber used in the cinematic trailers."
