Really? This was leaked on YouTube after C5 and is on the Blu-Ray extra features.

But, better late than never I guess.  :D

If you look at the blade after he turns it on, you can see it waving back and forth on the emitter. It's clear they didn't have a tracking rod when putting the effects on this scene. Just sayin' lol but still a GREAT scene!

I'm still unsure if the "Luke closing saber and igniting it" part of that deleted scene is real or redone lately without Hamill only to publicize eFX's Luke Reveal LOL Hamill said he did not remember of filming that scene at ConV... IDK

I know there are some conspiracy theories about the legitimacy of this being Mark Hamill, the most suspect being that video of him posted on YouTube in which he was directly asked about the scene and he says he didn't film it.  But there are several things to consider.  One, that having been involved in independent film productions I can personally attest to the fact that for a two and half hour movie there are literally hundreds of hours of footage that are shot that are never seen by the public and it's not out of the realm of possibility that Mark could have easily forgot ever shooting that scene given the fact that it was filmed over thirty years ago.

Plus when he and Lucas introduced the scene at CV, Mark mentions that he didn't recall having shot the scene and that they played it for him before they announced it, having not ever seen the final scene cut together.  As with most actors, they only see the final product and wouldn't necessarily see every single take.

Another thought I had was that the video with Mark being interviewed and him denying the scene was shot may have been an intentional denial on his part at the behest of Lucasfilm so that they could surprise the fans at CV.

Those theories make perfect sense IMO.  He could have easily forgotten, and I wouldn't put it past Lucasfilm to have him lie to preserve their secret...

Either way, I'm not a fan of this scene.  To me it takes away from the epic moment on the sail barge when he grabs his saber out of the air and ignites it for the first time.  Seeing that green lightsaber blaze to life in his moment of need is just too cool to cheapen with a pointless scene like this... but that's just my two cents.

I really enjoy the scene, but I think it was rightly excised from the final cut of the film.  His shadowy entrance into Jabba's palace where he chokes the Gamorrean Guards is awesome.  Plus I agree that seeing him catch that trusty V2 of his after flipping off the skiff plank was equally as cool.  The subsequent sandstorm scene was also an interesting take on Luke's character as he seems very somber.  It would have really changed the tone of the film had many of these shots made the cut.

I think the directors were wise to have left these scenes out of the final cut, but it's always cool to see "new" footage from our favorite series of films.

Agreed with you man. Even if it was a fake (which after your theories, I'm sure it is original footage), it is good they left it out.

It could appear stupid and/or "fanboy-ish", but when I watch the sail barge fight starting from Luke's jump out of that plank and R2 shooting him his Lightsaber, it gives me the chills EVERY TIME i watch it!

i remember years ago, people discussing if this scene was ever filmed. last i heard (before it amazingly appeared at C5 and on BR extras) it was planned, but never actually shot.
i hope we were wrong. very cool to see it. real or not.

as for the "tingle" we feel when he catches it on the skiff and ignites it, giving that little smirk of satisfaction (he NAILED that, btw)... man i feel that way every time i finish making a saber myself. EVERY time.

this is why the ROTJ luke saber is quite possibly my favorite. also the fact that when he uses this saber, he is a pure BA with it.
okay its tied with the ANH graflex, just because its the first time we see a saber fire up.

Let's put it like this: Graflex (IV or V with no distinction) is like the first Corvette Convertible, it was the first of the line and remains legendary. Luke's ROTJ (V1/V2 although I prefer V2) is the "top of the line" thing with bada**ity and coolness (the first green saber ever seen in SW!) like a Corvette ZR1 (maybe not the last, I'd accept even the Vette C4 ZR1 version xD)

This pretty much expresses my feelings on it.  Luke in ANH and ESB is a little whiny and uncertain of himself, but as of ROTJ he's VERY confident (I'd even go so far as to say a bit overconfident) and has power to back it up.  The green lightsaber of his own design is the symbol of the completion of his training, and the way he wields it is pure BA (as you mentioned).

I mean the guy plays the part of the patient Jedi all the way up until he gets nudged off the plank... then proceeds to slice his way through ALL of Jabba's henchmen and (with a little help from his friends) blow everything up.  And that's just the beginning of the movie :)

I love Jedi for that reason especially.  Luke really shows a lot of growth over the series and by the time Return of the Jedi rolls around, he's become a formidable opponent.  Plus his quick work of Jabba's men shows how powerful he's become.  I wouldn't think he's over confident, but simply sure of himself.  He does the right thing and tries to bargain with Jabba, even right before being walked out onto the plank.  But ultimately he does what is necessary, despite having warned Jabba more than once, the consequences of not letting him and his friend leave in peace.  Totally BA!
