Eh, because, just in my humble opinion, it adds dimension to the character :)

I thought it was a terrific plot arc! Obi has Qui Gon's defiance at the end of TPM *shrugs*. It would make sense at some point, as a spirited young Padawan on assignment, he met a woman who he was willing to throw off the Order for. And I like how, actually, he and Anakin could have related on that issue and then maybe the Emperor wouldn't have been able to screw with Anakin's mind the way he did. But ah well, we know how tragically it all turns out.
The Jedi Apprentice series by Jude Watson is a short story series of books that came out right after TPM... I think there are like 14 or 15 of them... Not sure which book but there is a story in there where Qui-Gon and Obi are on a mission and Obi ends up leaving the Jedi order to be with the girl in the story... Of course it ends up being a mistake and he comes crawling back to the temple with his tail between his legs....

Why would there "have to" be a woman?  Arent Jedi suppose to be MONASTIC knights? That is to say celibate monk-priests as well as warriors?

To paraphrase Yoda; intimacy can lead to love, love can lead to attachment, attachment can lead to suffering [we sure saw how that happened with Ani]. So since Attachment is forbidden, and unlike Qui Gon we always see Obi portrayed as mindful of the Jedi Code [he even chastises Qui-Gon about it in TPM], really there should NOT have been a woman in Obi's life.
Not all Jedi... there are special dispensations granted for interaction with the original cultures particular Jedi come from including things like marriage.... Ki-Adi Mundi is married with 2 or 3 children....

Good point but special dispensation exceptions like Ki-Adi prove the rule that MOST Jedi 'don't'.

As for those stories if they came out after TPM but before AOTC introduced the idea that romantic love is forbidden to Jedi are they still considered 'canon' or are the nullified by AOTC? Afterall there were books written during the 90s after ROTJ but before TPM where they went into details about Luke and Leia's mother [iirc she was some sort of NON-Jedi Force user or something?] which were 'retconned' out of canon by TPM so its possible that any books that may have portrayed 'Young Obi' having a 'love life' may also be retconned out of canon now by AOTC eh?
To DREAM the IMPOSSIBLE DREAM. To FIGHT the unbeatable foe. To BEAR with unbearable sorrow. To RUN where the brave dare not go. To RIGHT the unrightable wrong. To LOVE, PURE AND CHASTE, FROM AFAR [-sigh-]. To TRY, when your arms are too weary; to REACH the unreachable Star!... This is my Quest; To follow that Star, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far...
