Anti power off protection setting and placement of the magnet on the ring could solve that.

Ah! Touche!  It would probably have to be a rare earth magnet to be strong enough to activate the switch through that much aluminum though.  I install those things at work all day and steel door frames can wreak havoc on their dependability.

I have seen it in person in a hilt made by gundamaniac. I know it is possible to accomplish.
Although hidden switches would be easier and more sure.

Ya, but not nearly as cool as a saber that requires a "ring of power" to ignite.

Oops, shouldn't have made a LOTR reference here, I can here Dave316 repackaging Arod Megil to send back to VV for another refit as we speak.

One ring to power them all, and in your living room blind them!

Time will bring the real end of our trial.  One day they'll be no remnants

I can't resist in posting this old announcement  ;)

gundam indeed made a saber with a mag ring. It's common knowledge that Aluminium is permeable to magnetic fields.

as for the saber automatically going off then in deep sleep, it's of course totally possible. As CF keeps "working" when idle or in deep sleep, you still need (indeed) a kill key to stop the current consumption.

that being said, I hate automatic features like that and I envision a lot of users having problems with it.
I also have visions of obiwan, one harm on the floor, separated from his body, just before the ultimate stoke

Thanks ERV.

So is there something I can set in the config to make it go into IDLE/Sleep on its own after a timer? Or is it possible in the sense that it's possible that I win the lottery next week :p

This ring talk makes me think of the old Davis Magna-Trigger ring safety device for S&W revolvers. Those used Samarium magnets which were extremely powerful and would last for centuries iirc and the only stipulation was you couldnt use rubber grips that had steel inserts like Pachmayrs...however since the aluminum we use for saber hilts is non-magnetic I'd bet a similar samarium magnet ring would be able to penetrate the hilt to activate a magnetic switch easily.

edit: Argh I hate being a sloooow typist...Erv beat me to it...nevermind...lol

To DREAM the IMPOSSIBLE DREAM. To FIGHT the unbeatable foe. To BEAR with unbearable sorrow. To RUN where the brave dare not go. To RIGHT the unrightable wrong. To LOVE, PURE AND CHASTE, FROM AFAR [-sigh-]. To TRY, when your arms are too weary; to REACH the unreachable Star!... This is my Quest; To follow that Star, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far...

No worries, well I'll just rely on the killkey to turn it off, no big deal.

Just wondering though, does the killkey reset the state? As in, if it was in state: ON when the killkey went in, will the board remember that and power up when the killkey is removed? Or does it reset it to the IDLE state? The latter would be more logical I would think, as the board wouldn't want to be storing state information, but I have to ask :)

nope, the board remembers only the bank that you were using.

How much mA does the CF consume while its on? (+ speaker)

I have to know that because I am calculating the max discharge for my batteries...  :)

an average 200-250 mA with a regular soundbank. Then add the high power led, FoC (when activated), and accent LEDs.
