Anyone read "Fury?" Anyone
« on: January 03, 2008, 03:44:12 PM »

I have it but have not finished it.

 @@@@@ SPOILER ALERT@@@@@@

It's by the same author who decided the fate of Mara Jade. THAT STILL pisses me off. I stopped reading FURY at the point
where Darth Cadius  infiltrates Tenel Ka's palace because I dont want to see Karen Traviss kill off yet another favorite character.
It may be just me- but the situation with Mara really killed my enthusiasm for the series! I believe I have ALL the Star Wars novels to date- but this may be the last one.

I've read it.  It's a pretty good book, and none of the main characters get themselves killed (although Kyle Katarn get run through a grinder once or twice  ;D)

I agree with you about the death of Mara, but bear in mind that it wasn't just Karen that killed her off.
The Legacy of the Force series is joint written by Karen Traviss, Troy Denning and Aaron Allston, and has a fari amount of input from two people at LFL (I forget the names).
If I remember rightly, someone said during and interview that it was a choice between Mara or Luke to die, as this is what causes Ben to develop and mature, and  go after Caedus, which is one of the main lines in the series.

In that case I will finish it. So I should be pissed off at all three writers!?
I must admit, I'm looking forward to Cadeus getting his comeuppance! !!!

Killing off Luke Skywalker isn't even an option for all sorts of very obvious reasons. I wasn't happy about them killing of Mara, I personally thought that Luke had enough issues to deal with as was given who he was and how his life had gone.

But, I'm forced to admit it makes for some VERY interesting reading.

2010...I certainly hope it's better than 2009 was! ::)
10/10/10~Well, so far with my Father's passing away, I'd say that this year was actually worse than 2009, even the fact that I now have a full time job (For now) isn't anywhere near enough to make up for that...so...maybe 2011 will be better? I'm not holding my breath... ::)

:'(   I reaally didn't like the fact that they Killed Mara off.  After all, it took so long for Luke to finally have someone in his life and then have Mara taken from him.  Luke didn't deserve that.  Plus she was sick during the NJO series.  Both of them deserved a break for a while.

I hope they never kill Luke, the story was originally about him and got warped into the Vader series with all the new movies, but I agree that he finally found someone that completed him and I hated that she died, but ....

"...There is no death, only the Force."
"Death is a natural part of life, we must learn to let go of that which we fear to lose..."

I went to a con that one of the writers attended and he commented that he was sooo glad that he didn't have to write the book that she died in...

It is an excellent series and a great book. Great parallels between Ben and NJO Anakin. Killing off Mara pissed me off severely. She has always been my favorite EU character. First the family dog, then anakin, now mara, and for those who haven't read the conclusion of the series...prepare for more surprises :-X

I tuned out of all that stuff when they killed off Chewie...sent Han over the edge and started out right wrecking the whole Star Wars universe with the Yuuzhan Vong..As a result I only read Star Wars stories that happen before the PT or during the main time frame of the movies..... :D

The only reason I am still reading the Post Mara dying books are for Ben & Luke.  Someone has to watch over them.  Especially Ben.   Besides, there may be more novels with her like
1)Where she finds out about HER parents (just like Luke did)
2)Other things that have happened prior & during their marriage (like Survivors Quest)

I hope so

I just finished this series and reading some other things before and after before I continue with the follow up series. They were great books, GREAT. As for the whole Mara Jade thing. I havent read before this in the timeline and havent had many books with her in it. I was still upset for Luke about it, but I think it was the right motion to go towards. It gave you a sense of shock and worry as Luke tries to survive his loss. I think it added the doubtful touch for the legendary hero that it needed. Now when they did what they did to Luke in Inferno to scare you NOT COOL lol. For the readers that know what I am talking about, I ended my reading after that and teared. Then the next day when I read it I smacked myself in the face lol.

I really had a problem when they killed Chewie, Anakin Solo and Mara.  3 great characters (especially Chewie) and poof they are gone.  Reading the rest of the series and the 3 books in Fate of the Jedi, killing Mara really does shape Ben's maturity (in a good way) and his relationship with Luke.  But I'm tired of the EU writers killing off great characters.  They could have killed off Tahiri instead of Mara, she's annoying.

you know there is actually a thread about the Fate of the Jedi seires (I started it ;) ). and I know what you mean, I know we talked about it somewhere but the reason they killed off Chewie was to get your attention and basically say "anything can happen" in this series (the New Jedi Order).  as for Mara, and Anakin, I agree with you, but for me the fact that they are fighting in the epic wars ALL the time, it makes it more believable to have some of the characters die... if you look @ wookipedia on the New Jedi order page (I believe) they have a list of ALL the characters that died during it.

on a side note I was really upset when Pallion died (he had to be pushing 100, but still).  I really liked him as a supporting EU char.  and Tahiri is a victim of grief bc of Anakin and Jason took advantage of that and messed her up even more.  I like that in the FOJ series they are developing her char more.  I haven't read the latest one yet (I started another book to pass the time until it came out, it wasn't a long wait) but I am looking forward to it.

ok that was a long rant.  I am pretty sure I stayed on topic.
