Laser through polycarb?
« on: February 05, 2016, 08:47:17 AM »
Apologies in advance if this has already been suggested; searching with laser in the keywords wasn't much help...

Has anyone experienced laser-light going through polycarb, either clear or transp-white?

What I'm thinking about is using transp-white with lasers pointing up the blade through the material of the blade itself, so that the beams are nicely visible (they'd likely need to be red for the design I'm considering, unfortunately)

My initial concern is that if the laser is powerful enough to reach the tip, then it's also going to start burning the plastic.

It would surprise me if I was the first to think of this though, so I thought I'd ask around...

Hey,
I had the same idea ones,
I tried some small lasers but it was really hard to fit them inside a reasonably big hilt in the exact position. also ya they did not make it to the top.
Matters completely on the laser I think. might be worth a try.

They were a visible beam though, at least to start-with? Was that clear polycarb or diffused?

There was someone just recently (within 2015) that showed off his saber builds with lasers (blue and green). They were very impressive. I believe he had them in regular MHS.

Blimey, those are actually TOO good! I'm after predator-style tri-laser sights.

At least I now know it's not just pointless trying, thanks guys! Think I'll do some low-level experimenting with old DVD burner diodes and see where it leads.

Wow, cool,
I did not use a laser that powerful.
Think I might try it again with a more powerful laser now that I see it is possible. :azn:

I have a few new laser builds I've done that I wil be posting pics of soon. I actually did a retrofit in  A thin neck Luke ROTJ that came out nice.
