The Giant List of Lightsaber Clubs

The Giant List of Lightsaber Stage Combat Choreography, Fighting, Dueling, Martial Arts, Performance, and Sparring Clubs

Here's my giant list of lightsaber stage combat choreography / fighting / dueling / martial arts / performance / sparring clubs.

I expect this shall be stickied.

Too often people say: "Well, there's nothing like this near me!" But yet too often there is, and you are simply oblivious. Perhaps due to poor advertising, word of mouth, etc.

So here's a list - fully researched, with descriptions as provided by the clubs themselves, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, forums, etc.

Yes - MANY are SaberWars clubs, but that's only what I have experience with, and you'll find that many also ARE NOT. Yet. Because I did some exhaustive research.

These run the gamut - from clubs that concentrate on costuming and charity work with mild amounts of choreo, to pure choreography performance groups, to clubs that are full-on intending to convert lightsaber combat to a full-contact martial art.

If you are finding that a club you know of, or your own club specifically, is not mentioned - then I think I would prefer a private message, I intend this list to be a CURATED list for as long as possible.

I am even-handed; listing clubs - and their spin-offs, schisms and competition - in the same breath and the same paragraphs. Please do not be offended. The idea is not to inspire flame wars...

Preferably, I am trying to avoid clubs that currently consist of 1 or 2 people, so please don't let me know about you until you're established - following Caine's guidelines - with a website, a Facebook, Youtube, etc. In a few cases this was unavoidable.

I tried hard to give this list an international flavor, but there are still parts of the world unheard from - Africa, most of South America, Japan, most of Russia and China... if you have more of an idea of what's going on and what clubs exist, let me know!

I also tried to list some of the clubs we've lost along the way. While their websites remain up, they sometimes contain considerable amounts of information.

So, without further ado...
Another fine product from your friends at Corellian Engineering Corporation™.

If you asked me, I'd say this club is inactive.
However, the last time I checked (late 2010), I was told they still meet up. They're primarily no longer in Los Angeles, though - and they organize meetups by email list/texting - in other words, no active web presence at this time.
Current research (2012) indicates the "Endor Crew" is meeting again in Pasadena as of May 2012.

CT Jedi is a fairly new chapter of Saber Wars, an online community of people who share practical Martial Arts-based and Stage Combat oriented lightsaber techniques in order to create illuminated stage combat! WOW, that is a lot of big words! Let's break it down: We are group of geeks who share a passion for artistically swinging around rather LARGE glow sticks! But we always maintain safety... "Control before speed!" We are not character or cannon specific to any story franchise, so you have the exciting option of creating your own hero, from whatever source inspires you! Just add a lightsaber and you fit right in! And, yes, we offer classes locally in Lightsaber Stage Combat. This means, we show you practical knowledge of how to use a lightsaber, as well as how to "Wow the crowd." Yeah, that's what we do... but most importantly, it's about our community. It's also an excellent workout & great for those who just want to do it for the FUN of it! No Convention Experience Necessary :) The techniques taught as the foundation of CosKumite are from various styles of traditional and eclectic martial arts. Those techniques are then tailored into creative
fight choreography to fit the various individuals, characters, and weapons.

A5623: Introduction to Lightsaber Dueling and Stage Combat
This class will cover proper stance and grip when holding a lightsaber, basic spins, how to strike, and how to defend. Once everyone is comfortable wielding their lightsaber we will expand on these skills, using them to teach students how to construct their own choreographed duel, which they will have time to practice. We will be available to critique and assist in creating and learning your own choreography. We tried this class out at Splash 2011 and it was a huge success. Every team made an extremely impressive ~1 minute long duel which blew me away. Due to the class’ success we are teaching the class multiple times during Spark.

Taught by whiz-kid college students, for high schoolers in grades 9-12. (!!)

Ludosport LSCA (Italy)
Quote
The first sports school that practices and teaches combat techniques created to be used with a lightsaber in a new, original sport.
A true fighting school, not choreography.
There are schools in:
(Italian): Milano (principale), Torino, Pesaro, Roma, Ravenna, Vercelli, Somma Lombardo e infine Genova.
(English): Milan (main), Turin, Pesaro, Rome, Ravenna, Vercelli, Somma Lombardo and finally Genoa.

VICSabers (Victoria, AU)
Quote
ATTENTION FANS OF STAR WARS, LIGHTSABERS, SWORD FIGHTS AND FANTASY/SCI-FI!
Have you ever wanted to become that heroic Jedi or evil Sith you see in the movies? Ever dreamed of wielding the weapon that has defined a genre in a safe, friendly environment?
Then please join VICSabers! This group is dedicated to lightsaber stage combat. What is that, I hear you ask? It is the art of formulating a performance with a partner (or multiple people!) for audiences of all ages using everybody's favorite weapon: lightsabers!
"But, hang on! Lightsabers are deadly!" Wrong again, my friend! Since we are limited in our technology, we have resorted to designing lightsabers using polycarbonate (aka REALLY STRONG PLASTIC) and battery-powered LEDs to simulate the blade of light. All the electronics reside in the hilt, which can be designed in any way you wish!
Now, I said "become that heroic Jedi or evil Sith", remember? Well, guess what? VICSabers is purely "non-canon", which means you can create a character that can be ANYTHING you want! For example, you can be a Predator Jedi or an Vampire Sith! (Unfortunately, no full-blown immortals... That ruins the fun. ;) )
VICSabers will run classes on these core basics:
- How To Grip And Use The Saber
- Core Fight Elements
- Standard Performance Drills
- Lightsaber Forms
We will also run exercise drills! These assist in physical shape for your performances!
As of right now, we are currently looking for not only members, but teachers! Anyone with martial arts experience (and is a fan of the lightsaber, of course!) is welcome to come and help with the classes.
So, feel free to to join this group and show off your inner geek pride!
Only a few members so far! :)

The Guardians began as a science fiction/fantasy fan club that was made up of both martial artists and performance artists. Inspired by some of our favorite science fiction characters, we decided in 2006 to use our skills to help out in the community. We initially explored many different avenues of support, but we found that people most enjoyed our ability to provide live action entertainment that would draw attention to worthy causes. As we matured, we began to focus more on stage combat. Stage combat is defined as "Stage combat is a specialized technique in theatre designed to create the illusion of physical combat without causing harm to the performers."
As of 2011, we are taking steps to incorporate in the state of Virginia and become a 501(3)c Not-for-profit charity. This moves is our focus and dedication to continue to provide quality, live entertainment to better our community, our world.

Masters of the Force (Akron, OH)
Quote
In May of 2007, a group of like-minded friends and members of the 501st Legion’s Ohio Garrison founded Masters of the Force. Their goal was turning costuming participation at conventions, parades and charity events from simple photographic opportunities into a theatrical production. Through acting and athleticism, they came up with ways to produce live, simulated lightsaber combat based on some of the most memorable moments from the Star Wars saga. Masters of the Force focuses on two aspects of lightsaber dueling – choreographed battles and Jedi Academy Training.

Masters of the Force performed professionally for the first time in July, 2007 with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra's production of The Music of John Williams. The reaction from the audience was overwhelmingly positive, and Masters of the Force was invited to perform again with Erich Kunzel at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra. Masters of the Force knew they had tapped into something special. The members bring the magic of the lightsaber to life, celebrating the great battles everyone loved in the movies in a live stage performance.

The New Jedi Order was formed March 27th, 2009, as a core group of performers that are intensely focused on stage combat and light saber choreography. We are comprised of members that have worked with the PA, NY, LA, LI, and NJ Jedi clubs in the past. The founders of this group envisioned creating a safe environment for passionate and dedicated members to learn the art of performing live with light sabers. To that end, we emphasize the conditioning and strengthening of bodies and minds in order to make the performance more engaging and exciting for the audience.
Our group uses the light saber as a vehicle to showcase our stage combat skills. Although we do pull our inspiration for fights and characters mainly from the Star Wars universe, we are not limited by that in any way. The group’s members all strive to consistently improve in the art that we’ve chosen. Above all we are a community centered around the goal of becoming talented and dedicated stage performers.

Regarding Rebel Empire Workshop (Perth):
- they're a true "fight school" for choreography
- as such they charge over $100/mo USD for attending
so hope you have the money. They're not exactly what I'd call "hobbyist".

That said, you might be able to work something out. Give them a shot, and let us know! :)

Thanks everyone for the great feedback, it was many hours of work (which I also copied to SaberWars.com and SaberForum.com)

ESPECIALLY thanks to those of you who are discovering clubs local to you due to this thread. Your praise makes it ALL worthwhile! :)

Hey Stiletto just to give you a heads up Defenders Of The Force  "sanctioned canon costuming AND choreo/combat group - supposedly" We are sanctioned by LFL. We have a direct line to Mary Franklin. As being a member of the 501st ie Old Line Garrison and it's membership officer. We take it very seriously in what we do. Also here is a link to our forums http://defendersoftheforce.org/forum/. Also we cover Maryland with our sister groups OLG and Terrapin Base.
Thanks

Just goes to show, you never know. I hear so many different things from so many different people.

So Defenders of the Force _is_ a 501st/Rebel Legion spinoff. Okay.

Word from an East Coast 501st member (not naming the garrison/base, sorry) to me is that 501st/Rebel Legion nationwide is Not Allowed to do saber combat, choreographed or not.

Other people in a garrison/base tell me that saber combat/choreo is okay with their own group guidelines and with LFL, it's just that you can't involve kids in any way.

Other people tell me it depends on the region, some groups either aren't monitored as closely or have their own take on the national guidelines.

(Ever notice that videos of Rebel Legion/501st doing choreographed performances with sabers or reenactments of saber fights - Mustafar, Episode 1, etc. - drop off sometime after 2008? Yeah...)

Anyhow, I'm coming from a conglomerate of groups (SaberWars) that prides itself on professional-level choreo and having non-canon characters, so I'm already biased and I recognize that within me.

Sorry if I offended you, SL-2272. As I said in the beginning, I wasn't trying to. I'll modify the thread.

I'm not sure if I want to mention OLG and Terrapin Base - like I said, I'm REALLY ONLY TRYING to list groups that do lightsaber combat, sparring, or choreography - preferably with unique original choreo. I don't give a fig about costuming - if they do it, great, but if they don't know how to use their sabers, then boo. So I'd have to know if they actually consider it a goal of something to do. I heard that was something Defenders of the Force did, and I've seen the training videos too, so I know you do. But what about them?

PS. If you know what happened to the Jedi Guardians, I'm actually quite curious. They still around the Delmarva area?

It's all good. Defenders was created because of the 501st/Rebel Base can not do lightsaber demos or shows. So we found away around it :) Also just a heads up Maryland Jedi is a great group of people as well and is ran by a great man named Chuck Jeffreys IMD him you'll see what I mean
